His words cut through the room, icy and impossible to argue with. Instantly, the atmosphere dropped a few more degrees.
Iris could tell he was saying it for her benefit. Her face stiffened in shock. She never expected Walter Wilson to step in like this, especially in front of everyone, demanding an apology. Was Audrey Williams really that important to him?
Amy had just thrown out a couple of sarcastic remarks. Iris figured that in front of such a big crowd, Walter would at least hold back. She never thought he’d jump to Audrey’s defense without a second thought. Did he ever think about her? Tonight was supposed to be her birthday party. Now, thanks to him, she was left standing there embarrassed.
If she hadn’t been so determined to get what she wanted, Iris would’ve left right then. She hated this feeling of being humiliated over and over again. But she just couldn’t walk away, not when it came to Walter Wilson.
Forcing herself to calm down, Iris put on her best peacemaker face and stepped forward. “Amy, since you were the one who started it, you should apologize to Audrey. Once you do, we can all move on.”
Amy clenched her jaw. Anyone could see she was doing this against her will. The Brooks family’s status was even lower than the Carter family’s. If Amy tried to go against Walter, she’d just end up losing, and she might even drag her whole family down with her.
So, with no other choice, Amy stepped forward, ready to toss out a half-hearted apology to Audrey.
Before she could even open her mouth, Abbott, who had been silent the whole time, suddenly spoke up. Trying to play mediator, he said, “Come on, we’re all friends here. There’s no need to push things this far.”
Walter had always known Abbott had a thing for Iris. He’d kept quiet all this time, only to speak up now. Did he really think Walter’s people were that easy to mess with?
Walter wasn’t about to back down. His tone was ice cold. “If being friends means ganging up on Audrey, then maybe we don’t need those friends.”
Amy froze. She never thought Walter would kick her out of their group over something like this. She’d worked so hard, sucking up to Iris, just to get close to them. If she couldn’t hang out with them, the Brooks family would have a hard time getting ahead. Their business could even tank.
There was no way Amy could let that happen. All her stubbornness melted away. She walked up to Audrey, swallowing her pride, and managed, “I’m sorry.”
Audrey could hear the lack of sincerity in her voice. After everything Amy had said about her, now she just wanted to brush it off with a simple sorry? Audrey wasn’t having it. The usual smile on her face faded a little. “Whatever. If you can’t even mean it, I don’t want your apology.”
