A wave of panic rolled through her chest, stealing the air from her lungs. Audrey knew this feeling too well. It was the warning right before her illness struck.
Her medicine was with Walter. She couldn’t get to it… couldn’t get out…
She stared at the door, willing herself to move closer, but her body wouldn’t listen. In just a few minutes, her mind started slipping away, cold sweat prickling across her forehead.
A sudden fear gripped her. Was she really… going to die here tonight?
No. No, please.
She didn’t want to die, not like this, alone and scared. She hadn’t won Walter over yet. She hadn’t seen her parents. She hadn’t hugged her dad or mom, or seen her brother Camila…
If something happened to her, they’d be crushed.
But she could feel herself losing the fight. Her thoughts grew sluggish. Her eyelids were so heavy.
Just as darkness closed in, a loud crash rang out.
The storage room door burst open.
Light spilled in, tearing through the gloom.
Someone was here. Had they come to save her?
Audrey’s vision blurred, but she stubbornly kept her eyes on the doorway. Was it Walter? Did he really come?
It was Walter.
The moment he saw her, his heart nearly stopped.
“Audrey!”
His voice was raw, thick with fear, panic, and desperation.
That sound yanked Audrey’s mind back from the edge. It was him. Walter.
She wasn’t going to die here. Relief flickered for just a second before everything slipped away for good.
Right before she blacked out, her last clear thought was simple. Thank God he came…
Maybe it was the limits of her body, maybe it was the trust she had in Walter. The second she knew it was him, Audrey let go and fainted.
