Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1299

Walter didn’t say a word. All he could think about was Audrey, and he just wanted the doctors to check on her as soon as possible.

He carried her down the stairs. The moment they reached the hotel entrance, the ambulance pulled up. Audrey’s doctor jumped out and called to him, “Mr. Wilson, let’s get her inside the ambulance. She’ll be much more comfortable lying down.”

The ambulance was way roomier than any of their cars, and with so many people around, they needed the space. Keeping Audrey in a cramped spot wouldn’t do her any good right now.

“Okay,” Walter replied without hesitation. He wasn’t a doctor, so of course he listened to the professionals.

Within moments, Audrey was settled inside the ambulance and they sped off. Walter stayed close, stepping aside so the doctors could work. This medical team had always looked after Audrey, and he trusted them completely. The ambulance was stocked with everything they might need for an emergency.

As the doctors were checking her, something clicked in Walter’s mind. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the little bottle Audrey had given him before the party. “This is her heart medicine,” he said, holding it out to the doctor. “Should we give it to her now?”

He remembered that last time she’d felt sick, this medicine had helped her recover quickly. Earlier, without a doctor there, he hadn’t dared give it to her, even though he’d had it ready.

The doctor glanced at the bottle and immediately recognized it. “That’s perfect, give it to her right away,” he said, his voice a little rushed. “Mrs. Smith made that medicine especially for her. It will help stabilize her.”

Walter didn’t wait. He shook a few pills into his hand and put them in Audrey’s mouth. She was completely unconscious and couldn’t swallow, but thankfully Dr. Davis had thought of everything. The pills dissolved instantly, absorbing straight through her mouth so the medicine would kick in faster.

After about ten minutes, Audrey’s breathing finally sounded steadier. It wasn’t as faint as before, when it had seemed like she could stop breathing at any second.

The doctor checked her again and finally relaxed. “She’s stable for now.”

Hearing that, Walter could finally breathe a little easier too.

Half an hour later, the ambulance reached the hospital. Audrey was rushed into the emergency room and Walter was left pacing outside. He stared at the blinking light above the door, his heart pounding with fear. The waiting was torture.

Back at the hotel, chaos had broken out. Aiden had called the police, and their arrival threw the whole banquet hall into a frenzy.

“What’s happening? Why are there cops everywhere?”

“Did something happen? Why are the police here?”
