“I heard the girl who was locked up was Audrey. Amy was just spreading rumors about her earlier.”
“Rumors are one thing, but this is just cruel. Audrey has a heart condition. Why would anyone go that far?”
“Amy and Iris are super close, but even tonight Iris didn’t look like she was on Audrey’s side. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Carter family was behind this.”
Barrie and Flora’s faces drained of color as they overheard the guests whispering. If strangers could put two and two together, the police would figure it out in no time. But most of all, they just wanted to know where their daughter was.
They exchanged a worried glance and started to sneak off, desperate to look for her. They barely got a few steps before a bodyguard blocked their path.
“Where are you going?” the bodyguard said, his tone ice cold. “Didn’t you hear the police? No wandering around.”
“We… we weren’t going anywhere,” Flora stammered, her voice trembling, which only made her look more suspicious.
Just then, someone rushed in from outside and called out, “We found the person who locked up Ms. Williams!”
It was Aiden. He walked in, his men dragging a man behind them. Every eye in the room followed.
The man was shoved to the floor in front of everyone. He was the one who had taken Audrey and tied her up.
The police didn’t waste a second. They stepped forward and demanded, “Tell us everything. Be honest.”
The man was shaking so badly he could barely speak. With all the police standing there, he just collapsed.
“I… I’m just the Carter family’s driver. Iris told me to do it. She said just to lock the girl up for a few hours and let her go after midnight. I didn’t hurt her, I swear. I didn’t kidnap anyone. Please, I didn’t do anything wrong. Just let me go…”
He spilled everything right away.
Harden’s jaw clenched in anger. “You didn’t do anything? Are you serious? How is this any different from kidnapping? You covered her mouth, tied her up, locked her away. Do you have any idea that’s a crime?”
The driver burst into tears, shaking even harder. “I just did what I was paid to do. I don’t even know the girl. I’d never have dared to do it if someone hadn’t told me to. Please, officer, you have to believe me. I have the chat logs on my phone…”
Desperate, he handed over his phone and did everything the police asked.
The officer checked the messages and nodded. He handed the phone to a colleague to bag as evidence, then asked, “Where is Iris now?”
Harden looked around, didn’t see her, and said, “I’ll call her.”
He dialed Iris’s number, but it just rang and rang with no answer.
