Aiden had brought him straight to the banquet hall, ready for a full-on confrontation. He laid everything out right there, not even trying to hide it. Iris was the one who gave the order, and the messages between the two of them were still on his phone for anyone to see. There was no way to deny it—they had both witness and evidence.
They’d found Iris, too. When we got there, she was tangled up in bed with one of the hotel waiters, completely out of it, like she’d been drugged. She kept slurring your name, over and over again.
Just talking about it made Harden look sick. “Honestly, it’s obvious. She meant to drug you, but ended up getting herself instead. All that business about trying to keep you from leaving? That was her plan all along.”
Walter didn’t say a word, but you could feel the darkness coming off him in waves. He looked like he was barely holding it together.
Harden kept going. “I always thought Iris was into you, but I never imagined she’d stoop so low. And now Ms. Williams got dragged into this mess because of her. The Carter family’s been hauled in by the police. What are you going to do next?”
Walter’s voice was cold, completely flat. “We’ll handle it by the book. There’s no need to ask for my input.”
“All right.” Harden gave a small nod, then shot a glance at Audrey, who was still unconscious. “So what are you going to tell the Williams family?”
Walter turned his gaze to Audrey. It was the first time his eyes looked soft all night.
“I’ll tell them the truth,” he said quietly.
He knew he had a part in this mess. He’d promised Camila Davis and the others that he’d look after Audrey, but he’d let her down. The guilt was heavy on his shoulders.
It was already way past midnight after everything that happened. Walter looked at Harden and Aiden. “You guys should get some rest. We can deal with everything else tomorrow.”
There were bodyguards outside, and the Williams family was already there. No point in them hanging around.
“Got it.” Harden glanced between Walter and Audrey. He knew Audrey liked Walter, and anyone paying attention could see Walter cared about her back. He’d seen how panicked Walter was tonight. He just guessed Walter probably hadn’t figured it out for himself yet.
If he and Aiden left the two of them alone, maybe this would finally push things forward between them.
No way was Harden going to stick around as the third wheel. He nudged Aiden, and the two of them headed out.
Once they were gone, Walter paused for a minute, then took out his phone and called Dennis Williams.
Dennis sounded surprised when he picked up. The two of them rarely spoke. Still, he answered right away, his voice as cool as ever. “Why are you calling me?”
Walter normally wouldn’t have called either, but the guilt was eating at him. He spoke, a little quieter than usual, “Something happened. I thought you should know.”
