Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1303

It took Audrey a minute to collect herself as flashes of last night slowly replayed in her mind. Suddenly, it all came rushing back.

She remembered everything.

Instead of answering right away, she smiled, her eyes curving playfully. “Did you come save me in the end, Walter?”

She recalled seeing a blurry glimpse of him just before she passed out, and hearing him calling her name.

Seeing her awake and with that teasing little smile, Walter finally felt his heart start beating again. The night before, she’d looked like a shell of herself, and it had scared him more than he could describe. She’d seemed so fragile, like a broken doll.

But now, with color restored to her cheeks, it was like someone had flipped the switch, bringing her back, making everything around her come alive again. Walter realized he was breathing easier too.

Relief and gratitude rushed through him. “Audrey, I’m so glad you’re awake.”

She saw the emotion swirling in his eyes, and for a second, Audrey, normally so calm, felt a flicker of impatience. She wanted him to know everything—right now.

She slid her hand behind his neck and pulled him closer, catching him totally off guard.

He opened his mouth, about to say something, but she beat him to it.

Her eyes still shone with a smile, but this time something serious and electric sat underneath. “Walter, I like you. Will you consider being my boyfriend?”

Her confession hit him like a shock. Walter just froze, his mind blank. He didn’t want to say no, but… wasn’t this all a bit fast?

Audrey barreled on, “Last night, I honestly thought I was going to die in that storage room. I had a hundred regrets, and not telling you how I feel was one of the biggest. Before I passed out, I just thought… if I survive, I have to tell you the truth.”

Thank goodness she’d made it. And when she woke, he was the first thing she saw, right at her side.

Walter opened and closed his mouth, but no words came out.

She didn’t expect him to be able to react. He couldn’t have known she liked him—all of this must be overwhelming.

Easing the tension, she kept going, “I know you might not like me back, and that’s fine. I can wait for you to come around. But if you can, don’t make me wait too long, okay? I mean, I came all the way to Harrisburg just for you, and I’ve been trying so hard to get close to you, and I keep dropping hints. At first, I figured we could take our time, but after last night, I can’t stop thinking about how unpredictable life is… well, anyway, it’s really not urgent. Take your time, really, I’m not rushing you! You can think about it as long as you need. Of course, if you want to start thinking about it now, that’s totally fine too. But honestly, I’m not in a hurry at all!”

She kept insisting she wasn’t in a hurry, but her whole expression practically screamed she wished he’d say yes right this second.
