When Camila heard those words, her mind blanked out for a moment. She wondered if she’d imagined it. But everyone around her looked so genuinely happy, there was no mistaking it.
Almost without realizing it, Camila glanced at Dennis, searching his face for confirmation. Before she could say anything, Dennis pulled her into his arms. “Camila, did you hear them? They said… they’ve found the cure!”
His voice was as steady and calm as always, but underneath, she caught a slight tremble. He never showed his feelings, but now she could clearly hear the emotion in his voice.
So she hadn’t been dreaming. It was real.
That realization washed over Camila and, suddenly, she laughed with relief. “Yeah, they did it!”
All those months of work had finally paid off. Maybe it was even thanks to the good luck charms Dennis had gone out of his way to bring her that morning. Whatever it was, her luck had finally turned, and it was all because of him.
Camila’s eyes grew wet as she looked at Dennis. She wanted to say a thousand things, but they all tumbled out as, “Dennis, thank you.”
The whole team was caught up in the rush of happiness. For so long, the antidote had felt like a heavy weight on their shoulders. It was surprising to see Dennis reacting like this, though. Everyone remembered how reserved he used to be, how nothing ever seemed to shake him. No one expected him to drop the mask, not even for good news.
But right now, everyone could understand. Even Mr. Morris, who was usually the model of composure, had tears running down his cheeks. Months and months of effort, all that energy and money poured into the project, and now they finally had something to show for it.
Camila didn’t have to die. There was nothing better than that. Suddenly, all those endless days and nights felt worth it.
Camila, Dennis, and the rest of their team waited outside all morning, nerves keeping them on edge. The hours crawled by until, finally, in the afternoon, the lab doors opened. The researchers, including Professor Keri, stepped out, exhausted but obviously relieved.
Abner Young, Mr. Morris, and Dennis hurried over, desperate for answers.
“So? Did everything go okay?” Mr. Morris’s voice shook even though he thought—hoped—they had succeeded.
