Dennis offered no opinion, but a gut feeling told him something was off.
Preventing Larry from attending the gala—what was the ultimate goal? Were they afraid he would disrupt the event and stop Brian Adams from becoming the new head of the Adams family?
No… that didn't add up. Given Larry’s current influence within the family, he wasn't yet a significant enough threat to Brian’s succession. The kidnapping seemed like an overreaction.
Unless… the Adams family had discovered that Larry had collected evidence of their past crimes and was planning to expose his stepmother and father at the gala. In that case, this disappearance was likely a desperate attempt to get that evidence.
But the Adams family couldn't be foolish enough to think Larry would only have a single copy. For something this important, anyone would make backups.
Larry had, of course, considered this. He had given Dennis a copy for safekeeping long ago. This shouldn't be hard for them to guess, either. After all, Dennis had helped him uncover much of that information in the first place.
In just a few minutes, countless possibilities raced through Dennis's mind.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. He looked at his assistant. “Aaron!”
“Yes?” Aaron turned, confused.
Dennis beckoned him closer. Aaron immediately leaned in, and Dennis quickly whispered a set of instructions in his ear.
After listening, Aaron’s expression grew serious. “Understood.”
He then told the driver to pull over. The driver complied. Once the car stopped, Aaron got out and walked away.
Christian watched him go, then looked at Dennis in confusion. “Mr. Williams, where is Aaron going?”
Dennis got out of the car and scanned his surroundings. It was a construction site under development, empty and vast. It was late at night, and the workers had long since gone home. Besides the bodyguards and Dennis's group, there was no one else in sight.
Almost at the exact moment Dennis stepped out of the car, a stir in the darkness gave way to movement, and a group of well-trained men suddenly emerged from the shadows. In the blink of an eye, they had surrounded Dennis and his team.
Christian was startled by the sudden development. His heart hammered in his chest, but he forced himself to remain calm and whispered to Dennis, “Mr. Williams, who… who are these people?”
Dennis stood as still as a mountain, his composure unshaken, as if he had anticipated this exact scenario. He answered Christian calmly, “They’re with the same people who took Larry.”
“What?” Christian was dumbfounded. He glanced at the men encircling them. “Then… why are they ambushing us?”
Targeting Larry Adams was one thing. Everyone in Cabinda knew about his precarious position in the Adams family. But this was Mr. Williams! Who would be so reckless as to make a move against him?
