Brian raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
Isabelle nodded. "Really!"
Brian said with a mischievous grin, "That sounds about right!"
"Tell me, now!" Isabelle demanded impatiently.
Brian didn't hold back. "The driver that day did arrive, but you were already passed out. Mr. Cross gave him five hundred bucks and sent him on his way."
"So that's the 'go to such lengths' you mentioned?"
Brian murmured, "Well, not exactly..."
"What else?" Isabelle pressed. Seeing him hesitate made her even angrier. "Just spit it out!"
"Mr. Cross was the one who found out about Gary's affair. He was also the one who made sure you saw it."
Isabelle was stunned!
So that means he has started having this ring made almost as soon as he knows about Gary's cheating? Or even earlier?
Isabelle asked, "When did he start paying attention to me?"
"Whoa, your brain is moving way too fast. I'm afraid I'll die sooner if I keep talking," Brian said, too scared to continue.
Isabelle stabbed her fork viciously into her salad, giving Brian a look that could kill. They've been keeping so many secrets from me!
"Tell me—" she gritted out.
Some nearby colleagues noticed the tension, thinking the two were having a fight.
Brian decided to just lay it all out. "Mr. Cross had his eye on you even before we applied for the jobs. The only reason he hired me as an assistant initially was to be his informant. Otherwise, an intern like me would never have gotten that position. The apartment you rented at Magnolia Gardens was leased by him. He only charged you half the rent. The car I took you to buy—he had someone slash the price to sell it to you. And also—"
"Stop, stop..." She needed to process this.
Damian kept glancing their way, feeling their conversation was too long and their expressions odd. A chill ran down his spine, a sense of impending doom.
"Before we even applied, he had his eye on me?" Isabelle seized on the wording.
Brian felt like dying. He shot another desperate look toward Damian, who was watching them.
Ashley, sitting across from Damian, was also looking at Brian and Isabelle, puzzled. Is Damian this gossipy? Does he actually enjoy watching his subordinates date?
"If you look at him one more time, I'll dig your eyes out!" Isabelle threatened, looking like she'd kill him if she didn't get answers today.
Brian said, "Three years ago, he stayed in Solvenia for a while. Remember?"
Isabelle was taken aback. Three years ago? It goes back that far?
Brian paused. "That's all I know. I swear on my wallet, I know nothing about his injury!" He held up three fingers.
Isabelle believed he wasn't lying. "One last question."
Isabelle, however, lost her appetite. Her mind was filled with thoughts of that man. He's had his eye on me for so long? And he never showed it? He even helped me deal with that scumbag? His scheming runs deep.
And he really saved face for me.
Someone asked, "Ms. Foster, that ring of yours—how much did it cost? Is it real?"
Everyone was curious if she had landed a sugar daddy.
"I sit at a workstation, not on the boss' lap. Where would I get money that fast? This looks like a nine-ninety special from a discount app," Isabelle quipped with a playful wink.
Everyone laughed. The elevator went down first. After they left, Isabelle used her keycard to go to the 30th floor.
The 30th floor, according to Brian, had just been moved into a couple of days ago.
She knocked on the CEO's office door.
The door had just opened when a hand pulled her inside. A familiar scent washed over her.
"Damian..."
She tried to push him away, but her strength was no match for his. His grip only tightened.
Isabelle fell back onto the sofa, a figure looming over her. Any words she might have said were swallowed by his kiss.
A chill spread up her legs, making her shiver slightly. The air between them grew thick and heated.
"Damian, the bedroom..." she managed.
His eyes were deep, his glasses already set aside on the coffee table.
