Chapter 258 Gratitude and Guilt
It was then that Isabelle noticed Jonathan standing near the doorway.
“Jonathan,” she spoke first.
Jonathan felt a pang of awkwardness facing her.

He was currently investigating whether Sophia could have been involved, and his conscience was uneasy–especially after everything that had happened recently, that feeling had only grown heavier.
“I’m really glad you’re alright.”
Before coming, he had actually rehearsed quite a bit in his mind. But once he arrived, the words lodged in his throat.
He wasn’t sure if he should say them. If it turned out Sophia had any part in this, he wouldn’t be able to face anyone–how could he face Isabelle? How could he face the Cross family?
Isabelle had saved his wife and unborn child; she was his brother’s wife. And Sophia was his own sister.
Navigating this was incredibly difficult.
But now that he had decided to send Sophia abroad, it seemed he really couldn’t wait any longer–the sooner, the better.
“No need to be so formal. I would have done the same for anyone.” Isabelle understood his position naturally.
At a time like this, an incident so clearly targeting her… it was hard not to suspect Sophia, who seemed the most likely.
But no one was voicing it aloud.
Isabelle couldn’t bring it up now either. Lying in the hospital bed, there was little she could do, and discussing it wouldn’t change anything.
Since Jonathan hadn’t addressed it directly, he must have his own reasons.
His child, his partner, and his family were all tangled in this.
“You should rest. I’ll stop by again tomorrow.” He didn’t feel right staying longer.
Abigail was now confined to her hospital bed. She’d been in the smoke filled room too long

and had developed a minor lung irritation, along with some bleeding, but thankfully the baby. was still okay–a small blessing in a frightening situation.
Now everyone knew about her pregnancy.
He needed to get back and stay with her.
Shortly after Jonathan left, Damian walked in carrying an insulated container.
Regina exchanged a few more caring words with Isabelle and then tactfully stepped out.
Damian opened the container, ladled out a bowl of warm chicken broth, sat by the bed, and began feeding her spoonful by spoonful.
“Was it you who carried me out?” Isabelle asked.
“Yeah,” Damian replied quietly, using a napkin to dab a spot from the corner of her mouth.
“Were you hurt?”
“Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.” His eyes remained on the bowl, not meeting hers.
Isabelle looked him over carefully. He didn’t seem to have any visible injuries.
She finished two full bowls of the broth and a large glass of water before the lingering discomfort in her body began to ease.
After resting quietly for a while, she drifted back to sleep.
Damian stayed up the entire night, keeping a silent vigil by her bedside.
He had rushed over as soon as he got Isabelle’s text. By the time he arrived, Abigail had already been brought out, but Isabelle was still inside.
God only knew the panic that had seized him in that moment.
Without a second thought, he had charged into the smoke and flames.
Everyone around had been stunned by his actions.
He tucked in the already neat blanket, his gaze fixed intently on her.
His eyes grew warm, threatening to blur.
He couldn’t bear to think about what might have happened if he had arrived any later.

Taking a steadying breath, he stood up and walked out, quietly closing the door behind him.
Just outside the room, he saw Jonathan leaning against the hallway wall, smoking.
Damian walked over, and Jonathan wordlessly offered him one from the pack. Damian took it with fingers that were slightly blistered, placing it between his lips. C
Jonathan lit it for him.
“Did you get those burns looked at?” Jonathan asked.
“It’s nothing serious. Put some cream on. I’m fine,” Damian responded while taking a drag, his brow unconsciously tightening.
When he had carried Isabelle out, a falling shelf had struck his back and shoulder. The impact hadn’t hurt much at the time, but it had left a red, burned welt. His knee had also slammed into the floor, scraping off a large patch of skin.
The two men talked in the hallway for a long time before finally heading back to their respective rooms.
The next morning, as Isabelle was finishing her breakfast, Brian arrived carrying a basket of fresh fruit.
Brian was dressed in a well–tailored suit, every hair in place, looking every bit the proper executive.
It seemed he had dressed with particular care–outside of formal meetings, he was rarely this put together.
Isabelle looked him up and down with an amused smile. Ever since he’d stepped out of the assistant role, that easygoing, casual air about him seemed to have vanished.
“Mr. Hughes, long time no see. You’ve really polished up into quite the distinguished gentleman,” Isabelle teased.
Brian glanced at the angry burns on her leg. “Give me a break, will you?”
Damian chuckled softly from the sofa where he was reviewing documents Brian had brought.
“Has she been by?” Brian asked.
“She” meant Diana.
No wonder he’d dressed so carefully today—he was hoping to see her.

After Isabelle finished her broth, Brian naturally cleared the dishes from her bedside table.
“She will, but she hasn’t arrived yet. The situation at the studio isn’t great. If you have time, could you go check on it for me? She might be struggling to handle everything alone.” Isabelle thought that even if Diana could manage, it wouldn’t hurt for Brian to lend a hand.
Brian nodded. After tidying up, he sat in a nearby chair, absently peeling an apple while his eyes kept drifting toward the door.
On the sofa, Damian was quietly discussing work matters with his newly hired assistant, Dylan Thomas.
He had postponed his overseas trip scheduled for the end of the month.
