“So when does your project finally wrap up?” Damian asked, continuing to gently apply the ointment to her skin.
“The plant is up and running now. There shouldn’t be any major issues going forward, but the team does plan to go down for a site visit,” Isabelle answered, watching his reaction carefully.
“When and where?”
“In Fertitta City. The exact dates aren’t set yet.” She quickly added, “Mr. Whitaker and Diana are both going. All the faculty advisors will be there. We’ll probably stay overnight in Fertitta, and I think there are some networking mixers lined up afterward.”
Damian gave a slight nod but stayed quiet, though the thoughtful look on his face said plenty.
Collin was making his move way too obvious, and it was getting under Damian’s skin. Even though he knew Isabelle’s heart was his now, he still couldn’t stand the idea of another guy looking at her like that.
Such a blatant play–did the guy have no shame at all?
Isabelle pinched his cheek lightly. “Hey, no need for the jealous act. He’s not taking me anywhere–I’m right here with you.”
“It’s not about him taking you. It’s about him even thinking he could.”
No–it was the whole package. He didn’t want anyone eyeing what was his, plain and simple.
Damian screwed the cap back on the ointment tube and placed it into the first–aid kit.
A simple scar cream wasn’t a big deal, but that guy just kept pushing buttons.
A low burn of irritation settled in Damian’s chest, one he couldn’t quite shake.
“Mr. and Mrs. Cross, dinner is served,” Susie called from the kitchen doorway.
Damian snapped out of his thoughts. Isabelle started to stand, but he stepped smoothly in front of her and scooped her up carefully.
“I can walk such a short way,” Isabelle protested, giving his chest a soft tap. She wasn’t exactly comfortable being this cozy in front of other people.
“Susie’s seen it all before. Still shy?” Damian chuckled softly, then suddenly dipped his head. and brushed a kiss against the corner of her mouth.

Isabelle turned her face away, her cheeks flushed pink.

Susie was used to this. Even before working for Damian, she’d seen similar–and often far more open–displays in other households she’d worked in over the
years.
She smiled warmly, finished straightening a napkin on the counter, and slipped quietly out of the kitchen.
With Susie gone and just the two of them left in the dining room, the color in Isabelle’s face slowly returned to normal.
“Try to keep things mild for the next few days. Go easy on BBQ sauce, teriyaki, and all that stuff–they could darken the mark while it’s healing,” Damian advised as he served her some grilled chicken and steamed vegetables.
Isabelle soaked in the warmth of his attention. Since the company went public, he’d barely had time for meals at home, and it felt like forever since they’d last shared a quiet dinner like this, just across the table from each other.
Just then, Isabelle’s phone, resting on the table, began to vibrate. The screen lit up with the name “Collin“.
Isabelle hesitated, her finger hovering over the decline button, but Damian reached over and tapped “answer” himself, putting it on speaker.
“Isabelle, did the scar gel arrive? My mother had it shipped directly from abroad…” Collin’s voice flowed through, smooth and concerned.
Damian’s brow lowered slightly.
“Thanks for the thought, Mr. Dorfman, but I’ve already taken care of what she needs. You should hold onto that one for yourself.”
Hold onto it for himself?
As if he was wishing him some kind of harm?
Damian’s words were polite on the surface but carried a distinct, sharp edge.
Collin caught the meaning perfectly but didn’t call him on it. If Damian was annoyed, then Collon was pleased.
It meant he was still seen as some kind of threat.
“Mr. Dorfman, have you had dinner yet?” Damian asked, his tone casual as he glanced impatiently at the phone.

Isabelle held her breath, genuinely worried Collin might say something deliberately provocative. Being stuck in the middle was seriously uncomfortable.
Collin paused, considering the question. “I was just about to, actually.”

“Alright then. If there’s nothing else, I’ll let you go. I need to feed my wife here. It’s not like her hands are out of commission–just her foot–but she insists I do it. So demanding.”
Damian muttered the last part, not bothering to end the call first.
Isabelle stared at him, eyes wide with utter disbelief.
She hadn’t said a word!
Who asked him to feed her?
Demanding?
Feed his wife?
The man really knew how to spin a story.
Just wait–she’d deal with him later.
Collin’s frown was audible through the phone. “Let’s catch up another time.”
