Chapter 313 Returning Home
“Mrs. Cross, Mr. Cross mentioned he’ll be tied up for a while and probably won’t be home for dinner, so I shouldn’t set a place for him. He left in a hurry and asked me to tell you–please make sure you eat properly and on time.” Susie relayed the message, appearing completely unaware of any underlying tension
Isabelle nodded. “Alright.”
She was hungry herself, so she set her bag down and went to the dining area to eat.
“Mrs. Cross, would you like me to stay over tonight?” Susie asked with a warm, helpful smile.
She had likely been informed about Isabelle’s pregnancy.
Susie usually finished her tasks and left promptly, never staying overnight. This change was almost certainly Damian’s doing.
He wasn’t comfortable leaving her alone in the house. If anything happened, it would be good to have someone nearby.
Even with Bruce and James on the property, they were both men, and some situations simply weren’t as convenient for them to handle.
Isabelle hesitated for a moment. In this home, she was used to it being just her and Damian, sharing the quiet space. Now that Damian had moved out, she was the only one left.
Susie was quick to offer a plausible reason.
“Actually, my family is out of town for a bit, so commuting back and forth by myself is a bit of a hassle. It would be much easier for me to just stay here.“–
“Okay, that’s fine,” Isabelle agreed with a nod.
Susie’s smile brightened.
Just as expected–Damian had coached her on what to say, knowing Isabelle would be more likely to agree.
Isabelle could pretty much figure out the setup.
Susie wasn’t a skilled liar, and her attempts were rather transparent.
That evening, Isabelle was sitting on the sofa in the study, sketching some preliminary designs, when her phone rang with a video call from Collin.
She hesitated for a few seconds, then switched off her own camera and answered. Only Collin’s side of the screen was visible.
“Calling so late?” Isabelle asked, her tone lightly curious.
It was already past nine. No matter how close a male friend he was, calling at this hour wasn’t entirely appropriate especially for a married woman.
Seeing the black screen on her end, Collin smiled faintly.
He understood her discretion.
But with Damian reportedly gone, he felt less restrained about calling her in the evening.
“My mom wanted to talk to you. Her phone’s getting repaired today, so she’s using mine.”
isabelle paused, looking slightly surprised. So that was it.
Collin handed the phone to Linda and stepped back, busying himself with something else–though he occasionally glanced over from a distance.
