Half of this situation was her fault if she was kept in the dark now, the guilt would only be heavier when she eventually found out.
“It’s not the same-I wouldn’t get hurt.”
“Hmph. If you pulled a stunt like that, I’d break your legs first. Then you could go do whatever you wanted.”
“She should have been here by now. Must be stuck in traffic or something. Give her a call.” Diana’s hands were busy with her food.
“Let me check.” Brian picked up his phone and dialed.
Outsice the door, Isabelle quickly switched her phone to silent.
Then she turned and walked away.
She waited until the call was about to go to voicemail before answering.
“Where are you?” Brian asked.
Isabelle steadied her voice. Her hand holding the phone was trembling, and the other, clutching a bouquet of flowers, shook slightly.
“Something came up today. I’ll visit another time. Don’t wait for me.”
Brian didn’t notice anything off. “Alright. Call if you need anything.”
“Okay.” Isabelle ended the call.
She walked to the hospital parking garage and got into the car.
“Mrs. Cross…” Bruce noticed the flowers in her hands again.
She had taken them out earlier but brought them back. Did that mean she hadn’t gone in?
“Take me to Damian,” Isabelle said flatly.
“Huh? Mr. Cross is away on his business trip.” Bruce paused, his gaze flickering away for a split second.
“If you make me drive myself, I’ll drop you off on a highway eight hundred miles from here and leave you there.” Isabelle’s voice was cold.
Bruce knew Isabelle well.
If Isabelle was talking like this, she must have already figured it out. She wouldn’t act this way otherwise.
After a two-second internal debate, Bruce pressed his lips together and started the car.
“Mrs. Cross,” Bruce began, glancing at Isabelle’s visibly upset profile, “I’m sure Mr. Cross had his reasons for not telling you.”
“I know,” Isabelle replied, her tone deceptively calm.
Damian didn’t want her to be upset. He didn’t want her to blame herself, and he didn’t want her fussing over him.

Just as Diana had said but the roore he hid it, the worse isabelle would feel when she finally discovered the truth.
“Pull over,” Isabelle instructed Bruce
Bruce carefully steered the car to the curb.
“Turn around. Let’s go see Diana,” Isabelle said.
“What about Mr. Cross…” Bruce was genuinely afraid of saying the wrong thing.
“If you give me regular updates from now on, I’ll treat you to steak dinners for a month

Bruce couldn’t muster any happiness at the offer right now.
What was going on?
Isabelle clenched her phone tightly.
If she showed up at the hospital now, Damian and the others would immediately assume she was as distraught as they feared. Who would end up feeling worse was anyone’s guess.
Damian needed rest. Isabelle didn’t want him worrying about her while he was recovering. So, she’d go along with his wishes-let him heal in peace.
Her job now was to eat well, sleep well, and take care of herself and the baby. She couldn’t give him one more thing to worry about.
“We’re not going to make trouble for him,” Isabelle stated.
Bruce nodded. “Alright.”
He turned the car around and headed back toward the original hospital.
By the time Isabelle stepped out of the car again, her expression was completely composed.
She couldn’t let the people who cared about her see her in pain.
“What took you so long?” Diana asked, looking at her with concern,
Isabelle’s eyes were faintly red, but no other emotion showed on her face.
“Nothing, just traffic. And I didn’t sleep well last night,” Isabelle said with a smile, placing the bouquet of sunflowers on the stand beside Diana’s bed.
Brian had already left to be with Damian, so only Diana was in the room.
“How are you feeling?” Isabelle asked.
Diana shrugged. “I’m okay. It just hurts. Probably gonna have a nasty scar, though.”
“It’s fine. The scar removal treatments they have now are pretty good.” Isabelle sat down beside the bed and picked up an apple t peel.
“Don’t bother. Brian’s been peeling apples for me all morning. I can’t look at another one.” Diana took the apple from her and set

aside
Both women were holding back the same secret, and the conversation lulled.
The room grew unusually quiet.
“I’m going to marry Brian,” Diane announced, breaking the silence.
“Oh.” Isabelle didn’t seem surprised.
“‘Oh’? Just ‘oh’?” Diana frowned. “Aren’t you going to ask why I suddenly decided to marry him?”
“You two getting married was inevitable. What kind of guy is Brian? He’s a master when it comes to emotions. Winning you over was just a matter of time. You’ve liked him all along-you were just too stubborn to admit it. It’s not like the rest of us are blind.”
“Isabelle, your tongue is getting sharp. Since when do you talk to me like that?”
“Don’t you know exactly what you’re like?” Isabelle shot back, a hint of anger in her voice.
She was angry that her best friend had kept this secret from her, siding with those foolish men without even a hint.
“Wow. This is a first. You’re actually picking a fight with me.” Diana was taken aback. It was the first time Isabelle had ever lost her temper with her like this.
And her words had stung.
