Chapter 404 A Wrecked Car
Chapter 404 A Wrecked Car
Each thud on the glass made her heart quiver.
“So, will you marry me?” Wilbur asked bluntly.
Kylie didn’t know.
She could guess that if she didn’t marry Wilbur, Stephen would just find some other wealthy man to marry her off to.
Kylie didn’t know how to answer.
“I’m in love with someone else,” Wilbur said.

“Then why haven’t you refused? Why even ask me? Do you think I’m the type to chase after someone who doesn’t want me?” Kylie
asked
She had no idea about any of this.
“And why did you come find me? You’ve already made up your mind, yet you ask me this. Is it because your family has power and you want to flaunt it? To humiliate me?” She asked, her voice full of hurt innocence.
“That’s not what I meant,” Wilbur said, lowering his head.
He really didn’t mean it that way. Ryan was the mayor now. The arrangement between Ryan and Stephen was something he couldn’t interfere with. He just thought that if neither of them wanted this, they could at least stand together to oppose it.
Maybe that would work.
He hadn’t expected her to be so upset. “If you don’t want to get married either, we can try to fight it together.”
There might still be a chance.
After all, parents usually loved their children. And Kylie was a daughter-most fathers doted on their daughters, right?
Stephen will probably consider Kylie’s feelings.
But Wilbur was wrong.
Kylie felt utterly wretched.
No one wants me. Not a single person.

He pulled it out, and the bright lock screen lit up.
It was a sunny, vibrant photo.

Kylie wore a light green floral sundress and a huge sun hat, standing by the ocean with the wind in her hair. Her smile seemed brighter than the waves.
The sea breeze lifted her hair and made her skirt flutter, outlining her perfect figure.
Wilbur could see her free-spirited, open nature in that single image.
Yet just moments ago, she had been crying.
Who knew where she was now, hiding somewhere, hurting?
Who would want to marry a thirty-year-old man? Especially a modern woman in her early twenties with her own career. She wouldn’t just give in.
Wilbur sighed, put the phone away, got back in the driver’s seat, and decided to go look for her.
He couldn’t just leave her stranded on the street.
Wilbur drove back the way he came. A familiar car sped past him, and he glanced over.
It was the same white car that had been next to Ashley.
The summer rain began to fall harder again.
Wilbur found Kylie by the side of the road, trying to drag a man away from the pavement.
A wrecked car was in the middle of the street.
The rear end was smashed in. Gasoline dripped steadily onto the pavement, and a thin wisp of smoke rose from the front hood.
It was Isabelle’s car.
The man Kylie was pulling was Bruce.
She got him propped against a tree. Blood seeped from a cut on his forehead, mixing with the rain as it ran down his temple, over his cheek, and dripped from his chin onto his black T-shirt, where it vanished.
He was dazed, unable to speak, his eyes fixed on the car. His lips moved, forming the words “Mrs. Cross,” but no sound came out.
Wilbur quickly parked and rushed over to help.
Kylie stumbled to the passenger side, looking helpless.
Isabelle was unconscious. Thankfully, she didn’t seem to have visible injuries. Her hands were protectively clasped over her abdomen. The airbag had saved her.
“I can’t lift Isabelle. She’s pregnant. I’m afraid to move her…” Kylie’s words tumbled out in a scared stutter.

Seeing Wilbur, the panic she’d been holding back finally broke through.
Her face was wet, it was impossible to tell whether it was rain or tears.
“Did you call the police?” Wilbur asked as he carefully lifted Isabelle from the passenger seat and carried her to his car.
“I did. The ambulance should be here soon.” She had used Bruce’s phone to call.
Wilbur grabbed two new jackets from his trunk. He draped one over Isabelle and the other over Kylie, who was soaked through.
“Get in,” Wilbur said.
Kylie climbed into the back seat, watching over Isabelle, her hands still trembling.
Wilbur had just gotten Bruce settled in the passenger seat when the ambulance and police cars arrived.
He worked methodically with the paramedics to get both Isabelle and Bruce into the ambulance, then stayed to give his statement to the police.
