“Oh…” Lynn was stunned for a second, it had completely slipped her mind that cars needed a functioning electrical system.
“We should get out. The rain’s too heavy it’s not safe to stay in the car” The driver handed her är umbrella.
Lynn swallowed hard.
“Lynn…” Isabelle’s voice came through the phone, having heard everything.
“I’m here, I’m here…” Lynn opened the umbrella and stepped out, her heart fluttering nervously.
“Where are you now?”
Lynn gave her the cross streets. A powerful gust nearly knocked her off her feet, and the umbrella almost inverted.
The driver stood to the side, trying to call for roadside assistance on his phone.
Lynn retreated to the shallow alcove of a closed shopfront, while the driver positioned himself to shield her from the worst of the wind
“Thank you!” Lynn raised her voice.
“What did you say?” The wind was too loud; he couldn’t hear.
“I said, thank you!” Lynn shouted again.
The sleepy, tipsy feeling from the drinks was now completely washed away by the cold rain. Even under the narrow awning, she was drenched from head to toe; the umbrella was useless against the sideways downpour.
Her phone got soaked.
Another fierce gust slammed into them. The driver in front was shoved back a step. Lynn staggered behind him, and her phone slipped from her hand, landing screen–down in a deep puddle, bubbles rising from it immediately.
Lynn’s heart sank. She hurriedly crouched to fish it out.
It wouldn’t turn on.
Just one thing after another.
She sighed. Well. Car dead, phone dead. Couldn’t get much worse.
She had originally planned to stay out all night for a friend’s birthday gathering at the bar. Daisy was there too, and they were going to crash in Joseph’s private apartment above the bar.
But then she’d spotted Lucas there. He had shown up too, though he hadn’t seen her. To avoid getting caught by him, she decided to head home instead, and dropping off medicine for Isabelle.
Otherwise, she would never have ventured out in this hurricane.
“Did you call him?” Isabelle asked Damian, who was beside her.

did. He happened to be nearby. He’s on his way.” Damian hung up and continued applying a cool cloth to her neck. “How do you
feel now?
“Headache.” She looked up at him pitifully.
Damian helped her lie back with her head on his lap and began gently massaging her temples.
“Mmm, you’re pretty good at this,” Isabelle murmured, eyes closed in appreciation.
Damian pinched her cheek lightly. “Address me properly.”
Isabelle giggled.
“What do you want to eat tomorrow?”
Isabelle thought for a moment. “Braised pork empanadas. Can you make those?”
“Yes.” It seemed there was nothing Damian couldn’t do nowadays.
“Make them now?”
“Make them now?” Damian thought he’d misheard.
Isabelle sat up from the sofa. “Since I’m wide awake, give me something to do. Teach me.”
Damian looked at her determined expression, both amused and concerned.
Was this how a person with a fever–a pregnant one, no less–should be acting?
“You should be resting. Take it easy.”
“Please. I’ve been lying around all day.” Isabelle stood up, took both his hands, and pulled him toward the kitchen.
Besides the fever, her mind was mostly occupied with thoughts of Christian. She just couldn’t sleep.
Damian reluctantly let himself be led into the kitchen.
She had energy now, but he was the one who’d end up doing the work.

He took Isabelle’s hand and felt her forehead again. “Your temperature isn’t even that high. How are you fever–delirious? Who makes empanadas in the middle of the night? Hmm?”
Isabelle pouted, snuggling into his arms. “Sweetheart, but I want to eat empanadas.”
She tilted her head up. The unnatural heat from her body warmed him, even her exhaled breath felt scorching against his neck
Damian wrapped his arms around her waist and, as if under a spell, said, “Okay, I’ll make them for you.”
Isabelle laughed, nuzzling against his chest. “Love you to bits.”
The corner of Damian’s mouth lifted slightly.
It seemed the weariness on him melted away completely.
