Isabelle smiled, took the grapes, and headed upstairs
Lynn stole a glance at Lucas and met his gaze.
She popped a grape into her mouth, her eyes darting everywhere except at him.
Lucas looked away and said casually, “Your car got flooded. A tree branch fell on it.”
“What?” Lynn was stunned.
That car was a birthday gift she’d bought for herself, not with family money. She’d saved for a long time. After buying it, she’d had to cut back on other spending. And now, just like that, it was gone?
Repairs would be expensive. If she didn’t repair it, it was unusable.
Selling it wouldn’t fetch much.
A flood–damaged car…
“Is it totaled?” Lynn couldn’t help asking.
“I’ll buy you a new one,” he said.
Lynn mumbled, “Easy for you to say. I’d have to save up for ages…”
To afford another one:
She didn’t finish her sentence, finally processing what he’d said.
I’ll buy you a new one.
He was buying, not telling Lynn to buy it herself.
“You mean, you… are buying it for me?” Lynn asked, enunciating each word carefully.
“Mhm. Do you want it?” Lucas looked up, his expression serious.

His face was stern, the hand holding the book applying subtle pressure, his thumb rubbing the edge of the page he’d been staring at for the past half hour.
“Shouldn’t we wait until after we’re married? Then at least it’d be joint property.”
“We can register first.”
That wasn’t what she meant.
Once they registered, he’d legally be her husband. Even if she locked her door at night…
She didn’t want to sell herself off that quickly for a car.
“Heh…” Lynn forced a smile. “Let’s… wait, then…”

meant, if you feel I’m cutting comers, we can register first. If not, consider it a gift from me? Lucas clarified.
“It’s just a car. If you see one you like, you can use the card.”
Lucas pushed a black credit card across the table toward her. “A vorentary gift. Not marital property?
He’d thought this through pretty thoroughly.
Lynn pressed her lips together, looked at the card on the table, then at him. Slowly, she reached out and picked it up.
“Lucas,” she asked, “do you like me?”
Lucas lifted his gaze to look at her, paused, and found a suitable reason.

“I don’t have time to drive you around all the time, but I also don’t want people saying I’m too cheap to even get you a car”
“Tch-” Lynn stood up and walked over to him.
Lucas watched her, unsure what she intended to do.
Lynn grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling him closer.
Lucas didn’t resist. His eyes dropped to her soft lips. Then he felt something cool slip against his chest.
He looked down. Lynn had tucked the black card inside his shirt.
Lynn stared unwaveringly into his usually composed eyes. Her palm rested against Lucas‘ chest, right over the card now tucked
inside his shirt.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Moore! I definitely won’t trouble you again!” Lynn said coldly. “Even if every other man on earth dropped dead, I would never get in your car again! And those clothes you washed last night? I don’t want them back!”
Angry, she shoved Lucas back with both hands.
Lucas leaned back against the sofa, not sure which part had set her off. She was clearly furious.
He wanted to ask but felt too awkward to speak.
He reached into his shirt and pulled out the black card she’d tossed back.
Suddenly, Lynn turned around again.
Lucas, holding the card, stared at her dumbfounded, not daring to move.
“Lucas,” Lynn said, “have you ever been in a relationship?”
Lucas shook his head and replied flatly, “No.”
Lynn hesitated for a moment, then pressed on, “Have you ever… slept with anyone?”
Lucas fell silent, his expression unchanging as he stared at her, saying nothing.
Lynn’s curiosity only grew, and she asked again, “Have you ever even kissed anyone?”
