Damian leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples. Anthony had just calls said he cou checking in with him instead
When Damian pressed him about why, Anthony brushed it off with some small talk and being up.
It got under his skin, though he kept it to himself. Lately, he’d noticed just how much Kabelle caved about Anthony
It bugged him. One was his best friend, the other was his wife. He knew they were just friends, but seeing from to chummy rubbed him the wrong way.
They had that easy back–and–forth he just didn’t have with Isabelle.
A knock on the door snapped him out of it. Damian straightened up, smoothed his expression.
“Come in,” he said.
He slumped back again, looking every bit like a guy who’d rather be anywhere else.
Victoria walked in. For the first time, she wasn’t lugging her usual pile of files–just her phone. “Mr. Cross,” she said.
“Need a day off?” Damian asked, even though signing off on vacation time wasn’t really his job.
Victoria froze for a second. She hadn’t taken a single sick day since she started at Foster Group. She’d built up this rock–solid, reliable rep that earned Christian’s total trust. Damian knew that.
“It’s… something personal,” Victoria said.
“Personal?” Damian’s frown deepened. His mood was already sour. “Why come to me? If you need something, go see Dylan.”
Victoria paused, then unlocked her phone and slid it onto his desk.
She explained, “A college friend reached out yesterday. She sent me a big chunk of money, asking for your schedule in return. I can’t send it back. I’ve never had to deal with anything like this.”
Damian glanced from her to the screen, which showed a transfer for thirty thousand dollars. A faint smirk touched his lips as he picked up a pen and started twirling it.
“Who’s the friend?” he asked.
“Lydia Hawthorne,” Victoria said.
“Lydia…” Damian let out a short, dry laugh, raising an eyebrow at her. “And you’re saying no to thirty thousand dollars?”
She just stared at him, speechless. What is he playing at? Is he trying to screw himself over?
“…” Victoria started.
Damian cut her off, “What does she want my schedule for?”

endn’t say Victoria replied.
Damian ordered, “Get Dylan to race the account that sent it. Keep the cash, but dont touch it. You can give her some bapic info general stuff, nothing specific.”
“Got it,” Victoria said, though she still looked confused.
Damian stopped spinning the pen and gave her a once–over. “Meet me at the Westperch Hotel tonight Dress nirely r’il text you the room number.”
“Okay…” Victoria said, frowning uncertainly. She didn’t have any work things scheduled for tonight.
His eyes swept over her. Victoria seemed to live in the same two outfits. “Short on money?” he asked.
She shifted under his gaze, tugging at her blouse.
Damian didn’t miss her discomfort. He picked up his own phone and transferred thirty thousand dollars to her from his personal account.
A second later, Victoria’s phone buzzed. She looked at the notification, her eyes going wide.
“Mr. Cross, what’s this?” she asked.
“Consider it a loyalty bonus. Keep it,” he said.
Now he got why Christian trusted her so much. Victoria was solid. But how could a long–time executive assistant here, with the pay being decent, still seem so strapped for cash?
“Mr. Cross, I really can’t accept this “Victoria began.
“Go,” Damian said, waving a hand to dismiss her.
The thirty thousand dollars was a bit much for a bonus, but it matched her value.
Compared to the headache a scheming woman could cause, throwing money at the problem to make it disappear wasn’t a bad deal.
He leaned back again, spinning the pen absently as he stared out the window. Then he placed a call to Anthony.
Victoria left the office, her phone feeling like a brick in her hand. Six hundred thousand dollars in one day? This was unreal.
