“Thanks,” Lucas said, looking at the tie, then at her.

“No problem. I’ll probably be doing this a lot from now on,” she said, picking up her glass of milk and taking a sip.
Lucas watched her, his eyes on her flushed cheeks. From now on?
A small, genuine smile touched his lips. He hadn’t gotten the certificate with her today, but at least Lynn was still giving him a chance. She was willing to let them try to work things out.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” Lynn asked.
“I am.” Lucas said. He picked up his glass of milk and took a distracted sip, his gaze drifting back to her.
She had covered the hickeys on her neck. But her lips were still slightly swollen from his accidental bite the night before.
Lucas stared, momentarily lost in the memory.
Charles and Sandy came over and joined them at the breakfast table.
Calvin and Alicia had woken early and gone for a walk. Robert and Petra had left for the office, so it was just the four of them at home.
Charles and Sandy both noticed the small cut at the corner of Lynn’s mouth.
Charles set down his cup and looked at Lucas. “Dressed up so formally? Got big plans today?”
Lucas wasn’t sure how to answer and was about to make an excuse when Lynn spoke up.
Lynn smiled, “We’re going to get the marriage certificate.”
Lucas swallowed a bite of his sandwich and turned to stare at her.
Charles looked momentarily surprised. He glanced at Lucas, then at Sandy.
Sandy kept her head down, eating her sandwich. She showed no reaction to the news.
Lucas, however, looked genuinely shocked. She was clearly against it upstairs just a little while ago.
Lynn gave him a cool look. “You weren’t lying to me upstairs, were you?”
Lucas hesitated. “No…”
“Good,” Lynn said, and went back to her breakfast.
Sandy put down her fork. “You two enjoy yourselves. I’m full.”
Charles took her hand. “Not eating a bit more?”

“Not very hungry,” Sandy said, and left.
Lynn watched her go, then glanced at Charles.
Charles‘ eyes followed Sandy until she was out of sight before he finally looked away.
Lucas, meanwhile, couldn’t take his eyes off Lynn.
Lynn reminded him, “City Hall closes at noon sharp.”
Lucas hurried to finish his breakfast. Charles chuckled beside him.

Lucas was usually the one calling the shots at home. He had a good temper but kept his distance. Besides the elders and Lynn, no one else dared talk to him like that.
Lucas drove, with Lynn in the passenger seat.
The streets were nearly empty. Word of another hurricane coming had kept most shops closed, their windows already boarded up.
They hit no traffic the whole way.
Lynn rolled down the window, letting the cold air rush in, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside her.
Why did I agree to this?
“Lucas,” she said.
“Yeah?”
“Even after we get the certificate, you still can’t have sex with me. I…”
Lynn still wasn’t ready for that. Last night had been overwhelming enough. This morning, she’d
discovered he’d actually split her lip open from kissing her too hard.
Who knew kissing could make your legs go weak, make your whole body go limp? You want it, but you also don’t.
“I’m not ready yet,” she murmured.
Lucas swallowed hard. “Okay,” he agreed.
When Lucas parked the car, Lynn remained in the passenger seat, frozen with nerves.
She was so tense she’d even forgotten to unbuckle her seatbelt.
Lucas got out, walked around, and opened her door. He smiled, leaned in, and unbuckled it for her.
“Don’t be so nervous. It’s just signing a certificate.”
Lynn stayed put, her fingers nervously picking at the seat. “It’s not just a certificate. Lucas. After this, you have to be responsible for-
