Lynn was happy to follow him downstairs, but she slipped her hand out of his just as they reached the
stairs..
She felt that being too lovey–dovey in front of her family would be improper and awkward.
Lucas glanced back at her, his hand feeling empty. But this was still progress.
They went downstairs one after the other. Gordon and Betty had just returned from outside, a housekeeper pulling their luggage.
Another man was with them: Ruben Murphy, Lynn’s older brother.
“Ruben!” Lynn ran past Lucas to her brother.
Ruben reached out and ruffled her hair, looking at her with affection. “You’re all grown up, but your personality hasn’t changed a bit. Neither has your height.”
Lynn pouted, “You pick on me the second you see me.”
Ruben laughed and looked at Lucas behind Lynn.
Gordon made the introductions. “Lucas, Lynn’s husband.” He turned to Lucas. “This is Lynn’s older brother, Ruben. He’s usually abroad, so you might not have met.”
Lucas had noticed him the moment he came downstairs. He looks familiar somehow, but I can’t place him.
“Hello, I’m Lucas,” Lucas said.
“Ruben. I’m gonna need you to keep an eye on Lynn. She can be quite a handful,” Ruben said.
They shook hands politely.
“Ruben!” Lynn whispered, giving his arm a discreet pinch.
“You’re too kind. Lynn doesn’t need to hold back with me. I just want her to be herself,” Lucas said.
Lynn looked at him, and their eyes met.
Gordon smiled. Lucas really does have his eye on my daughter.
“Alright, let’s not all stand here. Come in for dinner!” Betty said.
They all went inside. Lynn let go of Ruben’s hand and slowed her pace, waiting for Lucas to catch up. Then, secretly, she hooked her little finger around his.
The moment she touched him, Lucas took her whole hand in his, holding it tight.
He didn’t let go until they reached the dining table.

Chapter 552 Want Her to Be Herself
Ruben observed Lucas without being obvious. Lucas didn’t notice; his eyes stayed on Lynn.
They all sat down.

Lynn liked to drink, and so did her father. Holidays usually included a little wine, but today was different. The table only had juice, not a drop of alcohol in sight.
Lynn leaned over and whispered to Betty, “Mom, did Dad quit drinking?”
Betty glanced at Lucas. “Lucas has a bad back. What are we drinking for? You need to tone it down! What’s a girl doing learning to drink, anyway? You’re married now. Bad habits like that have to change.”
Lynn pouted. She was just asking, and now she was getting a lecture. A little wine is good for you.
“I’m not changing. Lucas said I should just be myself and not have to hold back,” Lynn huffed.
Lucas, who was talking with Gordon nearby, heard her. He gave a small smile.
“How did you hurt your back?” Ruben asked.
Ruben was about Lucas‘ age. Gordon had Lynn several years after Ruben, and Ruben had always doted on
her.
When he heard that Lynn had gotten engaged to Lucas, only to call it off, and then marry him anyway, he’d dropped everything. He’d flown back from abroad just in time for Thanksgiving. He hadn’t expected to run into Lucas today; he’d planned to visit in a couple of days.
Lynn looked at Lucas.
“I got bumped during a rescue a few days ago,” Lucas said, turning his gaze to Lynn.
“I heard you were in the peacekeeping corps before?” Ruben asked.
“I was, for a while.”
“And you left because…?”
Lucas‘ fork paused for a second. He recovered, put a piece of meat on Lynn’s plate, and said to Ruben, “Normal discharge.”
Ruben nodded. “Good.”
After dinner, Gordon and Ruben went to the study to talk. Betty and the housekeeper cleaned up.
Lynn and Lucas sat in the living room. They didn’t have much to talk about, and it was still early.
“You should go up and rest,” Lynn said. He’d just had surgery. He needed to lie down, especially with a back injury.
“That’s fine. I’ll wait for you upstairs,” Lucas said, looking at her seriously.
