“Go get cleaned up and go to sleep,” Lucas said.

Lynn jumped, startled. “Okay.”

She put away the medical supplies and slowly started looking for clothes to take a shower. Her mind was stuck on Lucas saying he didn’t want to wear clothes.

She picked out a conservative set of loungewear and went into the bathroom.

The bathroom still carried the faint, citrusy scent of her body wash–the one Lucas had just used.

And Lynn was certain he’d used a lot of it.

She closed the door and locked it.

On the bed, Lucas slowly turned over. He glanced down, then at the bathroom’s closed door. He leaned back on her pillow and rubbed his forehead.

“Tough situation…” he muttered to himself.

By the time Lynn came out, Lucas had changed into loungewear. He was asleep in her bed, under her comforter, using her spare pillow.

Her nervous tension eased a little. Good, he’s asleep.

She tiptoed over, hoping not to wake him, and turned off the light. Then she quietly slipped under the

covers.

Lynn finally let out a sigh of relief. She turned onto her side, facing Lucas, and watched him in the dim light.

She secretly reached out and poked his cheek. Who knew a rough guy’s cheeks could be so firm and bouncy?

Lucas didn’t open his eyes slowly until her breathing grew steady, and the room was silent except for the faint tick of the clock. He looked down at the woman in front of him.

He gently kissed the top of her head. Lynn’s arms tightened around his, and her whole body went stiff.

Lucas froze. Is she not fully asleep?

Lynn wasn’t fully asleep, but she felt safe lying beside Lucas.

Lucas‘ breathing hitched. Right now, she was just like that time during the rescue, in the car when he was holding her. She had woken up but thought Lucas didn’t know.

She hadn’t dared to move.

He had told her quietly that the engagement was back on. If she didn’t respond, he would take it as

agreement.

Lynn was stuck. Waking up would be awkward, but pretending to sleep felt wrong. In the end, she could only agree silently.

This was exactly like that time.

He couldn’t help but let a small smile touch his lips. He turned onto his side to face her.

Lynn was still pretending.

Lucas quietly watched her long, thick eyelashes tremble slightly as she squeezed her eyes shut.
