He’d never been good at playing hard to get–it was exhausting. Give him direct and honest any day.
Lynn felt heat creep up her neck at his words. “There’s a difference between having dreams and being delusional.”
Lucas had taken shamelessness to an entirely new level.
This morning, she’d woken up looking forward to seeing him. Now? Not so much.
Flustered–and a little annoyed–she started powering down her computer and packing her bag.
Lucas just chuckled and stepped aside to wait for her.
Lynn shoved her bag into his arms and headed for the door without looking back.
He followed, then noticed his jacket still hanging on her chair. He doubled back to grab it before catching up to her.
Lynn pulled the door shut behind her–a little harder than necessary–and walked toward the elevators.
“Okay, you’re actually mad?” Lucas fell into step beside her.
She wasn’t really angry. She just thought Lucas was too much. Her skin wasn’t that thick. If any of her colleagues overheard him, she’d never hear the end of it. She needed to get out of there.
When she didn’t answer. Lucas smiled and moved closer.
Lynn glanced at him and shifted sideways. He closed the distance again.
The elevator doors opened. They stepped inside. The outpatient wing was quiet at this hour–most staff out to lunch. As soon as the doors slid shut, Lucas‘ hand found her waist.
Lynn sighed inwardly.
She felt like she was dating a man with absolutely no boundaries.
The elevator reached the ground floor. The doors opened. And there was Ruben. His eyes dropped immediately to Lucas‘ hand on Lynn’s waist.
Lynn nudged Lucas away. “Ruben.”
Lucas withdrew his hand smoothly. “Ruben.”
Lynn shot him a look. Why did that come out so naturally?
The two men locked eyes. And again, Lucas felt it–that strange tug of familiarity. He’d seen that look somewhere before. That same unsettling feeling.
Ruben ignored Lucas entirely. He turned to Lynn. “Taking you to lunch.”

“Okay.” Lynn pressed her lips together and glanced at Lucas.
Ruben looked at the papers in Lucas‘ hand. “Back checkup?”
Lucas nodded. “Yeah. Wanted Lynn to take a look.”
It didn’t surprise him that Ruben knew. Lynn must have mentioned it.
“We’ll head out, then.” Ruben made no move to invite him along.

They weren’t supposed to see each other before the wedding anyway. And Ruben had a pretty good idea why Lucas had really shown up at the clinic.
Lucas watched as Ruben led Lynn away.
Lynn looked back at him over her shoulder. There was something in her eyes–disappointment, maybe.
Lucas felt a pang of his own.
“Ruben, how did you know about his back?” Lynn didn’t remember talking to Ruben about Lucas much.
Ruben’s answer was brief. “Heard it through someone.”
Lynn was quiet for a moment. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming? I could’ve been ready.”
He smiled slightly. “What, did I interrupt something?”
Lynn pressed her lips together. “No.”
The word date hung in the air between them. It gave her an odd feeling–fluttery, unfamiliar.
“Thought for a second I was about to be the bad guy.”
Lynn laughed despite herself. “Ruben, what are you talking about?”
They rounded a corner and ran straight into the female doctor from earlier–the one who’d invited Lynn to lunch.
“Dr. Murphy…” The doctor’s eyes widened. Two men in one day?
Beautiful women really did have all the luck, she thought.
She’d assumed Lynn was with the guy from the consultation room. But here was another one–and he wasn’t keeping his distance either.
Seeing the look on the doctor’s face, Lynn spoke flatly, “My husband went home. My brother’s taking me
to lunch.”

The doctor’s gaze dropped to the simple band on Lynn’s finger–the one she deliberately held up.
Husband So the guy in the consultation room was her husband?
