Her eyes stayed fixed on the empty chair.

“Lynn.” Lucas‘ voice pulled her back.

She blinked. “Hmm?”

“Don’t be nervous.” He reached over and patted the hand resting on his arm.

“My brother’s not here,” she murmured as they walked.

Lucas kept his voice low. “Something must have come up.”

Lynn nodded.

She looked out at Gordon and Betty, both watching her with such warmth, such unmistakable pride, and some of the tension left her shoulders.

When Ruben was away before, she’d never really minded. But this was her wedding day. His absence stung more than she’d expected.

“The rings, please.” The officiant’s voice brought her back.

Lucas slid the band onto her finger. Behind them, the floral arch lit up–tiny white lights flickering to life

all at once.

Lynn jumped slightly. Lucas smiled, steadying her with a gentle squeeze of her hand.

She smiled back and slid his ring into place.

Lucas looked at her, something soft in his eyes. “No backing out now.”

She met his gaze and laughed quietly. “I’m not backing out.”

Then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. For a second, Lucas went still–surprised- then his arms came up and pulled her closer.

It was the first time she’d ever hugged him like that. On her own. Without being coaxed.

The guests erupted into applause.

Daisy clapped hard, eyes bright. “Lynn, I’m so happy for you!” But even as she said it, her gaze drifted sideways–to the empty seat beside her.

Still empty.

After the last guests had said their goodbyes, Gordon and Betty finally emerged from inside, having spent the past hour talking with Robert and Petra.

Betty blinked, then suddenly pulled Lynn into a tight hug. “My little girl… married.”

Her voice cracked. Tears spilled over.

For a moment, Lynn had been afraid something had happened to Ruben. She relaxed slightly, patting Betty’s back. At least it wasn’t that. “Mom, I’m not moving to another country. I’m twenty minutes away. Less if traffic’s light.” She kept her voice light. “Is it really worth crying over?”

But Betty just held on tighter. Even Gordon’s eyes looked suspiciously bright.

By the time Lynn had calmed them down and watched their car pull away, she was exhausted. She pushed thoughts of Ruben aside for now.

She gathered the hem of her dress and walked toward Lucas. He was talking with his cousin, Trevor.

“Back in the day, they’d have given you a Medal of Honor for this,” Trevor was saying.

Lynn slowed a few steps away, not wanting to interrupt.

Lucas‘ expression was unreadable, but something in it looked heavy. Worried.

He noticed her approach, and the conversation stopped abruptly.

He walked over. “Your parents leave?”

Lynn nodded, reaching for his hand.

Trevor nodded at her. “Hey, Lynn.”

“Hi”

Trevor glanced at Lucas. “I’ll leave you two alone. Gonna go check on some things.”
