Chapter 574 A Painful Goodbye
“No wonder they’re so eager to get rid of me now,” Lynn said bitterly.

People in circles like theirs stuck together mostly for convenience–Lynn had always known that, and she’d made peace with it long ago. It didn’t bother her; it was just how things worked. But somehow, this still felt like a betrayal.
Lucas watched Charles carry Sandy out, and the disappointment he felt toward his mother/was written all over his face. “You should go.”
“Lucas, do you even hear yourself?” Petra shot back. “The Murphy family is a disaster waiting to happen right now. Lynn could be hauled in for questioning by tonight.”
“So what?” His voice was ice.
“She’s not worth this!” Petra’s voice rose.
“I’m so disappointed in you.” Lucas bit the words out, then reached for Lynn’s hand.
She pulled back slightly, not letting him take it. “That’s your medal.”
Lucas‘ heart hammered in his chest.
He’d never been this terrified of losing someone before.
“I need to find my brother.” Lynn turned and headed for the stairs.
Lucas clenched the hand that had just been denied, shooting Petra a look that could cut glass.
Robert grabbed Petra’s arm. “Let’s go. Now.”
“What for?”
“Haven’t you made enough of a scene?”
Without waiting for an answer, he dragged her out the door.
The villa went quiet. Too quiet.
Lucas slammed his fist down on the table. The plates rattled.
He’d only asked Trevor to look into things as a backup, never expecting anything to actually come of it. But before Trevor’s team could make a move, Ruben had walked in and turned himself in.
Turned out he’d been running drugs along the coast for years–a major player in the trafficking network. Word was he’d been on the other side of that firefight years ago, rifle in hand, facing down the feds.
The pressure had been mounting lately, but he’d come back anyway. Probably for Lynn’s wedding.
Lynn locked herself in the bridal suite, tears streaming down her face.

Chapter 574 A Painful Goodbye
Whatever was happening to Ruben, it had to be connected to Lucas.

She walked to the walk–in closet, trying to get out of her wedding dress, but the ties in the back were too tight. Her hands shook so badly she couldn’t undo them.
Frustration boiled over. She swept her arm across the vanity, sending everything crashing to the floor!
Lucas heard the noise from downstairs and ran up, but the door was locked.
“Lynn!”
He pounded on it. “Lynn!”
“Don’t.” Her voice came through the wood. “Just don’t.”
“Please don’t do anything stupid.” He didn’t know how to explain any of this, didn’t even know where to
start.
Inside, Lynn grabbed a pair of scissors from the drawer. Standing sideways in front of the mirror, she cut through the ties at her back, the blades shaking in her hand.
She changed into regular clothes, wiped off her makeup, and laid out every single thing Lucas had ever given her on the dresser–neatly arranged, boxes aligned. Then she grabbed her bag and opened the door.
Lucas was still standing there.
Seeing her like this brought him back to that night when she’d shown up at his place, demanding to call off the engagement.
No–this was worse. Her eyes were harder now. More certain.
“Where are you going? I’ll drive you.” His voice was quiet.
Lynn looked at him, and her eyes went red.
“Lucas.” She paused, forcing down everything she felt for him–the anger, the hurt–until her voice came out soft. “I will never like you again.”
I will never like you again.
Lucas‘ mind went blank.
She had liked him. She’d just never said it out loud.
When had it started? Maybe that night he’d dragged her out of the bar. Or when he’d come to get her during the hurricane. Or maybe even before that.
It didn’t matter now. Whatever had been there had gone cold.
Lynn walked past him and kept going.
