Damian was sitting in her chair, legs crossed, silent and motionless, like a cold, aloof statue.
Ashley, who couldn't see anyone from inside her new office, peeked out. Seeing Damian sitting on an ordinary workstation chair with his eyes closed, her expression dimmed slightly.
By now, everyone's attention was fixed on the imposing man in the dark suit. For the first time, the design department was eerily quiet.
Isabelle paused, tightening her grip on the freshly brewed coffee in her hands. She walked over carefully and placed the coffee and some files on the desk.
"Mr. Cross..." she said softly, bending slightly. Damian's eyes were open now. The large man sitting in her pink office chair didn't look out of place at all.
"Hmm." His voice was lazy.
"Did you need me?"
"Tired. Just resting for a bit."
"Okay."
Everyone else was sweating bullets for Isabelle.
Isabelle didn't say anything more. Because there was a meeting that afternoon, she had no choice but to pull over another chair and work beside him.
This chair was shorter than a standard office chair, forcing her to crane her neck to see her computer screen. She swiveled her monitor around and dragged the keyboard over on its extended cable to continue working.
But the keyboard cable was only so long. With this imposing figure parked there, she was too embarrassed to ask him to move, and could only work at an awkward angle.
Messages started popping up in their work group chat.
"Ms. Foster, did you offend Mr. Cross in Solvenia?"
"Making our Ms. Foster work from a kid's chair? Don't let him get away with it. Just go sit in his lap..."
"Ms. Foster, seduce him."
An anonymous sender added, "Has anyone noticed how good Ms. Foster and Mr. Cross look together?"
Isabelle stared at the vulgar messages flashing on her computer screen. It was truly shocking. Someone even took a photo. But, he did look good in it.
"Everyone, pause what you're doing!" Brian stood in the center of the design department, with Ashley beside him.
Everyone put down their work and stood up, their gazes turning toward the new manager.
"This is Ashley Debose, the new manager for the design department..."
After Brian finished the introduction, Ashley began hers.
Isabelle listened carefully, but she noticed that Damian was now awake.
Crap, I can't let him see the group messages!
Isabelle didn't respond. He hadn't been back for over half a month. Was it all to get Ashley transferred to headquarters? Did he reject me... for her?
"Hey, say something," Eleanor said at the unusually quiet Isabelle, sensing something was off.
"I was just thinking," Isabelle forced a smile, "since Mr. Cross has taken my seat, maybe I should take this pink cushion home and enshrine it."
Eleanor laughed heartily.
Feeling helpless, Isabelle looked at the contact named "Honey" on her phone. Still no messages.
Everyone in the group was teasing him. Was he angry again just now? He is impossible to figure out.
Isabelle sent a message to Brian, "What's your boss been up to lately?"
Brian replied, "Working overtime."
Isabelle texted, "Speak plainly."
Brian sent a crying emoji, "I'm serious, working overtime. He's even coming in on the weekend."
"Does the CEO have to work overtime on weekends too? Doesn't look like it," she murmured.
"We work to keep the company from going under. The boss works so we don't lose our jobs. It's normal for the CEO to work overtime on weekends too," Eleanor walked back from the break room. "Why were you asking?"
