He picked it up and looked at the list Daisy had sent, towels, men’s shampoo, body wash… just daily necessities.

He looked up at her.

Daisy kept her head down, eating. “There aren’t any men’s toiletries here. Get whatever you like. There are extra toothbrushes and toothpaste.”

“Okay.” His heart stirred.

It was clear she wanted him to stay.

Given how she’d acted toward him just before, he’d expected to pack up and leave out of respect for her wishes

Daisy had thought the same.

“His wife and kids are here. Where else would he go? Anthony sleeps wherever he works. He probably hasn’t even bought a house. If you kick him out now, is he supposed to sleep on the street or in a hotel? You want your kids‘ father to stay in a hotel?”

She thought Anthony was pretty pitiful. Apart from his married–off sister, he had no family left.

In the end, Daisy decided to let him stay. He was right, they’d be living together eventually anyway.

While Anthony had been cooking, he’d been thinking that he’d overstepped. He should have asked firs or waited. He’d planned to eat, rest a little, then pack and leave.

He hadn’t expected Daisy to let him stay.

The table fell into silence.

“Your door code is too simple,” he broke the quiet, seemingly seeking a conversation starter.

Daisy had just eaten a bite of greens. She glanced at him.

He sounded just like Joseph, who’d been telling her to change the code for ages. She never bothered.

She set down her fork, unlocked her phone, and was about to change it when she paused and handed it to him. “You do it. Also, add fingerprint and facial recognition.”

Anthony looked at her phone and took it.

Their fingers brushed accidentally. Daisy quickly pulled her hand back.

He suddenly felt like they were both very familiar and very unfamiliar with each other.

“When did you get back?” Daisy asked.

“Just a little while ago.”

Actually, he’d come back early that morning, rung the bell, and no one answered. He’d thought Daisy lived here full–time and hadn’t wanted to disturb her. Since it was a woman’s place, he hadn’t felt right going in alone. So he’d waited.

It was lucky Lynn had come to pick Daisy up. Otherwise, he might have waited another two days.

“Next time you need something, tell me in advance. So I can prepare mentally,” Daisy said quietly.

“Okay” He nodded. He was used to being alone.

He’d thought not bothering her was respectful. He’d been wrong.

Daisy had nothing more to say, and Anthony wasn’t good at making conversation.
