“Mr. Vale, what was that all about?” Zach was confused. They’d been waiting for her, and when she finally arrived, Sebastian hadn’t even talked things through–he just let her walk away.
Sebastian set his laptop aside and motioned for Zach to start packing up. Catching the hint, Zach began gathering their things.
Leaning back against the sofa, Sebastian rested his forehead in his hand, looking thoroughly drained.
“She hasn’t eaten. If we jumped into everything now, she’d need time to process it. And if she passed out from hunger here…” He let out a light, humorless chuckle. “Then I’d be stuck taking care of her.”
“Since when did you get so soft, Mr. Vale?”
“Keep running your mouth and I’ll have your tongue.”

Claudia stepped out of the private room and made her way across the quiet courtyard.
Heading toward her was a group of about a dozen men who had just spilled out of one of the larger private
suites.
They were all dressed in suits–mostly middle–aged, with rounded bellies barely contained by their dress shirts, looking like they’d just enjoyed a hearty meal.
Claudia quickly moved aside near one of the doors to let them pass.
There were too many of them, and the strong smell of liquor hit her immediately. She edged back, leaning against the doorframe of a nearby room.
“Hey, watch it–you’re crowding the young lady here!” one of the men called out with a laugh, his bald head gleaming under the courtyard lights. He glanced toward Claudia, who was now pressed beside the door.
She lowered her gaze and stayed quiet.
The group came to a stop just as a service cart approached from the opposite direction. Someone else stepped out of a room ahead, leaving the whole party stalled in the narrow walkway.
A man with thick, heavy lips noticed Claudia standing close to him.
“Look at her–she’s blushing already!” he boomed, grinning widely.
“Come on, leave her alone. You’ll scare the poor girl.”
They kept referring to her as “young lady,” and she was trapped among them with no clear way out.
The thick–lipped man casually slid his hand onto Claudia’s shoulder.

“Don’t be nervous. None of us bites, okay?” His laughter blended into the rising chuckles around them.
She shifted sideways to slip out from under his touch. “Please let me through…”
“Hey now, whose girl are you? Need us to give you a ride home?” He reached out and caught her by the
arm.
ļ
Claudia slapped his hand away and stumbled backward–only for the door behind her to swing open suddenly. With nothing to brace against, she lost her balance and fell straight back into a firm, warm chest.
Heat enveloped her back instantly.
A large hand brushed across her side, then an arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her in.
The warmth of his touch spread through the thin fabric of her shirt.
As he steadied her, Claudia’s balance completely gave way, and she tilted into his chest.
Above her, all she could smell was his intense, clean scent–and then the familiar, subtle note of sandalwood.
She glanced up.
It was him.
Harold.
“Mr. Cross…”
Her ears burned. She hadn’t even pushed away yet, still frozen in his hold.
Harold looked down at her, then directed a cool gaze toward the men gathered outside.
A few of them near the door caught sight of the logo on Harold’s polo shirt and immediately averted their
eyes.
Perhaps the path ahead had finally cleared, because the group began to disperse, moving along with mumbled farewells.
Claudia quickly found her footing and took a step back, putting a careful distance between them.
“Claudia–good to see you,” came Howard’s voice from inside the room. He had just spotted her.
Claudia?
Since when did he call her that?
Why was everyone calling her that now?
Did every guy in his circle already know exactly who she was?

She managed an awkward nod in Howard’s direction.
“Have you eaten?” Harold asked, his voice low.
“I, uh-”
She was about to say yes, since eating here was far too expensive and she didn’t want to impose.
But before she could finish, her stomach growled softly–audibly.
“Come in,” Harold said, stepping aside to let her pass.

She hesitated. Her forehead was damp with nervous sweat. She wanted to decline, but couldn’t find a polite way out, so she slipped carefully into the room.
Inside was a table full of men.
All men.
I shouldn’t have come in.
She didn’t know where to put her hands, feeling like a rabbit that had wandered into a den of wolves.
They’d apparently been relaxed and casual moments before–a couple even had their shirts unbuttoned- but the moment Howard said “Claudia,” everyone had straightened up and looked presentable within seconds.
Claudia stood nervously, unsure where to sit.
The only free chair was right in front of her–likely Harold’s seat.
Harold pulled the chair out and gestured toward it. “Sit.”
