Harold placed the steak on the dining table, poured himself a glass of cabernet, and set a warm mug of milk at the empty seat across from him.
He picked up his knife and fork, cut into the tender meat, and took a slow bite. His gaze drifted toward Claudia, who hadn’t budged from the sofa.
She was curled up there, hugging a cushion tightly against her chest, her face flushed a deep pink–as if she might dissolve into the upholstery from sheer embarrassment.
“Claudia,” Harold said, his voice even.
“Yes?” Her heart jumped; she really was on edge.
“Come over here.”
He waited.
She didn’t move.

Harold tilted his head just slightly, his expression asking the question for him. Well?
“If I recall correctly,” he went on, taking a calm sip of wine, “the name listed as your legal spouse on the marriage license is mine.”
“Yes.” Claudia gave a small nod, biting her lower lip.
Right. This man was her husband–she’d almost let that slip her mind.
Someone like him was leagues ahead of any random guy out there, so why was she so nervous? It wasn’t like she was getting the short end of the stick here.
“Do you need me to feed you?” he asked, one eyebrow raised.
“No–no, I’m fine,” she stammered, so flustered she couldn’t even push herself up.
Harold looked down, sliced another piece of steak, and ate it slowly. The faintest hint of a smile touched
the corners of his mouth.
Then he set his utensils down and rose from his chair.
Claudia’s eyes widened as she watched him walk around the table toward her.
A wave of nervous tension washed over her, and she instinctively shrank back against the sofa.
Harold didn’t miss a single one of her reactions. Part of him didn’t care how scared she seemed–he wasn’t some creep off the street.
If he decided to make a move, it would be within his rights, completely legal, and honestly, expected under the circumstances.

But not now. She was promised to Harvey. There was an engagement arranged between their families, something Louis had worked out with her grandfather–probably without her knowledge.
Louis was handing her over to Harvey, the most steady and responsible of the brothers, so she’d never want for anything. Call it Louis‘ way of repaying the debt he felt he owed her for saving his life once.
Harold had always thought it was a solid arrangement.
But everything had moved too fast. With both Harvey and Damian out of town when things went down Harold had stepped in to handle matters first, planning to explain later.
Right now, he didn’t dare cross certain lines. What if down the road they all had to start claiming her as sister–in–law? That’d be… awkward.
For some reason, that thought left a dull, empty feeling in his chest.
He reached her, took her gently by the wrist, and guided her toward the dining table.
His grip was light, just a loose circle around her slender wrist, and he walked slowly enough that she could keep up.
Claudia had no choice but to follow, one hand clenched at her side, the other still pressing the cushion to her front like a shield.
She sat down, clinging to that pillow for dear life.
Harold resumed his seat across from her. His eyes flicked briefly to the curve of her chest.
34C.
Not bad.
Claudia picked up her knife and fork with unsteady hands, only then noticing that her steak had already been neatly cut into bite–sized pieces.
She glanced at Harold, hesitated for a second, then began to eat.
“You’re staying here tonight,” Harold stated flatly.
She looked up slightly and managed a soft, “Okay.”
“When’s your cycle due?” he asked.
Claudia’s hands tightened under the table, out of his sight. Her ears turned a deep, burning red.
She’d already let her imagination run wild–picturing exactly what might happen tonight in this penthouse.
The moves, the looks, the tension…
No meal had ever felt more painfully awkward.
