It became clear that the three underage individuals from earlier that day had indeed been sent by Jaden.

Just the thought sent a chill down her spine. The bruises on her back still throbbed faintly.

“Are you hurt?” Claudia asked, studying him carefully.

Sebastian paused. Instead of asking about the inheritance or the contents of the.will, this young woman had asked whether he was injured.

That was… unexpected.

“I’m fine. My assistant is still in the hospital, though,” he replied before taking a sip of his juice.

“Let’s talk over dinner,” Claudia suggested with a slight frown, picking up her fork and starting on her meal.

Maybe it was because she’d been on the go all day and the steak she’d had earlier hadn’t quite filled her up —or maybe it was because sitting across from Harold had stolen her appetite–but now she was genuinely hungry.

Sebastian gave a low sound of agreement and began eating as well.

“Find a time to bring your paperwork. We’ll go to the attorney’s office together,” he said after a moment.

Claudia took a drink of water. “Can you tell me what it’s about?”

“You really don’t know?” Sebastian raised an eyebrow.

She shook her head. “There’s a property out in the countryside, but that’s already under my name. Other than that, I’m not aware of anything else. But this past year, people did come by fairly often to see him.”

“What did they come to see your grandfather for?”

“Mostly just signing documents,” Claudia recalled. “Nothing out of the ordinary.”

“And whose name were they signing for?”

“Mine.” She hesitated. “I didn’t look too closely at what they actually were.”

Graham had always been thorough, and Claudia had trusted him completely, so she never pressed for details

Sebastian nodded slowly. He understood now.

Claudia wasn’t sure what that nod meant. She set her fork down and waited for him to explain.

“Graham menuoned you’d had a tough time on your own–that your uncle and aunt hadn’t treated you well He didn’t dare show you too much kindness openly because he was afraid they’d make things even harder for you. So he quietly transferred all his assets to you behind the scenes. Those signatures you provided were likely for the property transfer and some related agreements.”

“Property?” It took Claudia a second to catch on.

Then it hit her–the only place in Nevaske City that could be referred to that way was Southhall Compound.

That place was worth well over a billion dollars. It had long held a partnership with the state government. Major internal meetings, official negotiations, receptions for high–ranking officials—all were held at Southhall Compound. Getting in required significant standing. Anyone who walked through those doors was someone of real influence.

And that estate… belonged to Graham?

No wonder Jaden was willing to go to such lengths.

This was a serious prize.

Claudia spoke with Sebastian for a while longer. They agreed to visit the attorney’s office the next day–the sooner, the better–to cut off any plans Jaden might still be scheming.

But she was uneasy about potential trouble along the way.

Claudia decided to ask Harold if he could lend her a few security guards for the day.

Just as Sebastian stepped out of the private dining area, he stopped and glanced back. “Your car is still parked in front of the firm. Would you like me to drive you over to pick it up tonight, or should I have someone bring it to you tomorrow?”

She’d almost forgotten about the car at his office. She checked her phone–9:30 PM. There was still time.

“I’ll go get it now. Thanks, I appreciate it.”

“Not a problem.”

After that, neither spoke much.

Sebastian walked to the passenger side, opened the door for her, and closed it gently once she was seated. Then he circled around the front and slid into the driver’s seat.

Not far off, a tall man in a black suit stood with his back to the streetlight, half–hidden in shadow. His expression was unreadable. Hands tucked into his pockets, he watched as the Lexus pulled away and disappeared down the street.

Inside the car, Claudia opened an app on her phone and requested a rideshare driver for later.

When they reached the firm, she thanked Sebastian and said goodnight. Her driver arrived right on schedule.

The car pulled up to the rear entrance of Serene Manor. Claudia stepped out, limped slightly as she regained her balance, shut the door, and made her way inside.

It was past ten o’clock.

She rode the elevator up, still feeling a little unsettled from the day’s events.
