“What status did you transfer her under?” he asked.

Harold glanced at Harvey before looking back at Damian and replying softly, “As your daughter–in–law.”
Harvey felt his chest tighten at those words.
He had been planning to visit Claudia in the next couple of days when he found the time. After spending years studying abroad and then returning to take over the family business, he’d been swamped for so long that he’d almost forgotten he was technically engaged.
Besides, a few years back Claudia had still been quite young, and he hadn’t wanted to rush anything.
Regina studied the household register, frowning slightly. She pointed to the word “Married” beside Claudia’s name. “What’s this ‘Married‘ here? Who did she marry?”
Isabelle froze for a second, then took the booklet from Regina. Damian grabbed one edge, staring at the entry before turning his gaze to Harold.
All eyes were now on Harold.
Harold shot a guilty look toward Harvey, took a deep breath, and said, “Me.”
Damian’s voice rose. “You?”
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Harold swallowed, pulled the marriage license from his pocket, and laid it on the coffee table.
No one moved for a long moment. Then Harvey reached over, unfolded the official document, and quietly examined the printed details beneath its stateissued seal.
Seconds ticked by.
Harold watched his brother anxiously.
Harvey’s expression remained calm, almost unreadable. He folded the certificate gently.
“Back when I got beaten up, I was completely in the dark,” Damian said, struggling to keep his anger in check. “You’d better explain yourself today, or I swear I’ll make you look even worse than I did.”
Harvey looked at Harold, his gaze steady and patient.
Harold rubbed his palms over his knees, laid out the whole story from beginning to end, and then sat back on the couch, waiting for whatever came next.
No one spoke for what felt like a long time.
“You’re not good enough for her,” Damian finally said, his brow furrowed.

Claudia was a kind, gentle girl. Harvey would have been the right match–but all this had just happened by chance, without any planning.
Isabelle clicked her tongue softly and patted Damian’s arm, signaling him to ease up.
“Does Claudy even know she was engaged to Harvey?” she asked.
“Probably not,” Harold admitted.
Otherwise, she would have asked him to contact Harvey long before now.
He’d thought about reaching out to Harvey back then, but it wouldn’t have helped. Harvey was overseas on business and would certainly have had his ID on him. If not, Harold might have just taken Harvey’s identification and gone through with the marriage paperwork himself.
He’d also been worried that Edgar might reissue the household documents, which would have made transferring Claudia’s status much harder.
Harvey handed the marriage license back to Harold.
“My brother did the right thing,” he said gently. “I would have done the same in his position. That was the best option available at the time. We can’t blame him for it.”
Harold looked up, surprised.
Harvey turned to Damian and Isabelle. “This isn’t something we can decide alone. We need to hear what Claudy wants. Graham passed away so suddenly–she never even knew about the engagement. Just treat her well, Harold. That’s what matters now.”
Harold’s fingers stiffened slightly. A wave of guilt washed over him. “But you’re more suited for her than I am,” he murmured.
He already had a child. Claudia deserved better.
As much as he didn’t want to let her go, he knew his own flaws. His stubbornness had caused the family enough trouble over the years. He didn’t want Claudia to suffer because of him.
Harvey really was the better choice.
“Listen to me,” Harvey said, pausing briefly to collect his thoughts.
“I’m almost ten years older than her. Putting age aside, marriage isn’t something to take lightly. If you divorce her just so she can marry me, what would that make her feel?”
The room stayed quiet.
Harold had clearly already wrestled with that same thought.
Harvey continued gently, “She’d think you rejected her. Then she’d have to call me her husband, and she’d never feel at ease around you again. Every time she saw you, it would be awkward. On top of that, she’d feel like some token being passed around between the brothers. She’d be walking on eggshells here even
