Chapter 749 Why Long Sleeves?
“Of course,” the officer replied with a polite smile.
Carson stood frozen, completely stunned.
Harvey got to his feet, flexed his wrist, and walked straight out of the station.

By the time Claudia came to, she was already lying in a hospital bed.
She blinked open her heavy eyelids and tried to shift slightly–a sharp pain shot through her right wrist Her right foot throbbed, and there was a bandage wrapped firmly around her forehead.
She reached slowly for the nurse call button beside the bed.
Two doctors in white coats entered the room.
One of them was a familiar face–Lowell.
He was holding his phone, screen still lit. When he noticed Claudia was more alert, he walked over to her bedside.
“You really scared us. Glad to see you’re finally awake,” he said, looking her over. “How’s the head feeling?”
He really had a way with words…
“My head’s fine,” Claudia answered, frowning slightly.
“The scan showed a mild concussion. Let us know if anything feels off.”
Lowell checked her vitals and glanced over her chart.
“I feel okay,” Claudia said.
“Still remember your husband’s name?” he asked casually.

Claudia paused, a little caught off guard.
The term husband sounded strange coming from him.
Lowell raised an eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you forgot. Guess I’ll have to call him back early.”
“No–I remember! Harold. My… Harold. I remember him.” Claudia’s cheeks flushed as she stumbled over her words, dropping her gaze.
She wasn’t quite ready to face Harold yet. A little distance might be best–she honestly hoped Lowell wouldn’t actually call him.
“What’s wrong, afraid of him?” Lowell asked, amused.

Chapter 749 Why Long Sleeves?
On the other end of the phone, Harold frowned deeply.
But hearing that tentative “husband” softened his expression, just a little.
Claudia felt a wave of helplessness at being so transparent.
“When can I leave?” she asked.

“Whenever you’re ready. Just be careful with that wrist–it’s a minor fracture. Your foot’s still swollen, bu it’s improving. Rest up. If your head’s clear, you should be good to go.”
Lowell set his phone down, gently lifted the blanket, and helped her test her steps.
Claudia sat up slowly. A white sling cradled her right arm against her chest. She really did feel helpless barely able to defend herself in this state.
She took two cautious steps forward, with Lowell following closely behind.
Once he was sure she could walk steadily, he relaxed.
“You mentioned earlier he’s out of town?” Claudia asked.
“Yeah, he’s back in his hometown. Should return in a few days, I’d guess.”
Good.
Later, Lowell explained that the driver had been caught–arrested for a DUI by the enforcement.
That wasn’t the full story, of course. Loretta had hired the man to kill her.
Lowell didn’t dare reveal that. He’d simply followed Harold’s instructions and arranged for two bodyguards to keep watch discreetly.
Claudia wasn’t foolish, though. After everything that had happened these past two weeks, she was still on edge. Lying in bed, she texted Darren to arrange a female bodyguard for her–someone who could also serve as a personal assistant.
Lowell handled her discharge.
Darren worked quickly. Before she left the hospital, the new bodyguard arrived to meet her directly.
Nora Hampton was tall and slender, with short hair and a sharp, no–nonsense demeanor. Dressed in casual trousers and a jacket, she rarely smiled and gave off a clear keep–your–distance vibe.
Claudia liked that about her. She was quiet, unobtrusive.
Nora gathered Claudia’s belongings, carefully supported her as they walked, and led her out of the room.
As soon as they stepped into the hallway, Claudia noticed a man in a baseball cap sitting in a chair not far
off.
