Chapter 766 Virtue Reaps Reward
Just as she was about to speak, her phone buzzed in her pocket.
Claudia fished it out–Nora was calling.
She glanced over at Harold, who immediately picked up on her hesitation.
“I’ll wait for you by the entrance,” he said, already stepping back.
She let out a quiet breath, her cheeks still warm. “Okay.”

Harold withdrew his hand and turned to leave. As he walked away, a slight smile touched the corner of his mouth. He rubbed his fingers together absently, wondering if he should make a move tonight.
Then again, he’d only just suggested they give this thing between them a try earlier today. They were barely even dating yet.
If he pushed too hard too soon, who knew how she’d react.
He sighed. Better to wait a little longer.
Scaring her off wouldn’t be worth it.
But then his mind drifted to the thought of taking her home for Thanksgiving, sharing a room, maybe even a bed…
Leaning against the hood of his car, he kept his eyes fixed on the entrance of Southhall Compound.
Roger, sitting behind the wheel, watched his boss through the windshield. The man’s expression was clearer than ever–as if someone had run it through a sterilizer.
Yep. Mr. Cross is gone. Totally love–struck.
Less than five minutes later, Claudia emerged from the building carrying a long rectangular box.
Harold couldn’t look away. It hit him then–so this was exactly his type.
“Mr. Cross,” she said as she reached him, feeling her face grow warm under his steady gaze.
“Yeah,” he replied, straightening up with that lazy ease of his.
She held out the box.
Harold took it and glanced at the attached label.
Lot 178, 48–inch wide vintage gold–flecked batik–treated parchment scroll, transitional cursive lettering- Virtue Reaps Reward–Ludi.
Claudia pressed her lips together briefly. “The piece from today’s auction was a recent reproduction. It lacks age, and the penmanship feels unrefined and uneven. It was never worth the asking price.” She

nodded toward the crate. “See if this one suits you better.”

Harold paused. He’d only wanted to buy that auction piece because he saw how her eyes lingered on it. He never expected…
And this one was an original Ludi. Anyone with a passing interest in calligraphy knew how hard it was to get hold of Ludi’s work. Yet here she was, handing it over just like that.
“You don’t like it?” she asked cautiously.
“I like it.”
How could he not?
In the back seat during the ride home, Claudia fidgeted, restless.
Earlier, when she’d gone to see Nora to ask for the piece, Nora had filled her in on what happened just before she arrived.
Claudia still felt a chill thinking about it.
Now she understood why Harold had held her so tightly earlier—he hadn’t wanted her to see him get rough with anyone.
The stories she’d heard about him suddenly felt real: that he had a temper, that he didn’t shy away from confrontation. It was why he didn’t have a huge circle, and especially few women stuck around.
Turned out those rumors weren’t entirely unfounded.
Harold glanced at Claudia beside him. She was sitting so close to the door, it was like she’d drawn an invisible line between them.
He didn’t comment, just frowned slightly and closed his eyes, leaning back as if to rest.
Claudia peeked at him, then quietly pulled out her phone and texted Chelsea.
“Does Harold ever get physical with you?”
Chelsea, who’d just gotten into her own car, replied almost instantly.
“I’ve seen him throw punches, but never at anyone close to him. Why? Did Harold hurt you??”
“Not yet.”
“Not yet“? Chelsea’s curiosity was instantly piqued. “What’s going on? Is he being an ass?”
“He’s not being an ass.”
“Well, Harold’s actually a really good guy. Listen, if you’re gonna date someone, why not go for a guy who can handle himself? Anything else would be kinda silly. You have no idea how good it feels–ugh, I’m jealous enough of that man. I swear his pecs are bigger than mine.”

What was she even stressing about day after day? Wasn’t Harold a catch?
Claudia wrinkled her brow. Were they even having the same conversation?
