“No, I just had too much to drink last night and had a bit of a reaction,” Claudia said quickly.
Molly raised an eyebrow. “A reaction? Looks to me like you got drunk and someone took advantage.”
Claudia paused, then turned to the full–length mirror, her eyes settling on her neck.
It really did look like marks.
Wait–could Harold actually have done that?
He always seemed so detached. Would he really be bold enough to kiss her while she was out cold?
Claudia touched her collarbone. Oh god, did everyone notice?
“Let me grab you something to cover those up,” Molly said, adjusting the ribbon in her hair.
Outside the fitting room, Harold overheard their hushed conversation.
The curtain slid open, and Claudia stepped out, holding the front of her dress as she glanced at him.
Harold, seated on the sofa, stilled for a second.
Molly had gone to find concealer, leaving the two of them alone.
“How does this one look?” Claudia asked softly.
Harold snapped back to attention, stood up, and walked over. “It’s nice.”
Honestly, she’d look good in anything.
Claudia hitched the waist slightly. It was a strapless design, cut low in the front–when Harold glanced down, more than he intended came into view.
He swallowed. “Maybe… try another one.”
Claudia looked up. His ears were flushed. He was embarrassed.
She nodded, and Harold turned away awkwardly, closing the curtain again. He stood there motionless for a long moment.
Claudia waited inside, only two layers of tulle separating them.
By the time Molly returned with the concealer, Harold had already settled back onto the couch.
Inside, Claudia changed into another wedding gown.
“So how did you two meet? How did you end up with him?” Molly asked as she applied the concealer. “He doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body. What do you even see in him?”

The questions came all at once, and Claudia wasn’t sure which to answer first.
“He’s good to me,” she said with a small smile.

Molly made a face and lowered her voice. “Just be careful, okay? If he ever lays a hand on you, call the police right away.”
Claudia stayed silent.
Outside, Harold frowned.
“Harold,” Molly called, her phone ringing. “Come in here and help her with the back tie.“,
Claudia turned to give Molly a look, but Molly was already stepping out, phone to her ear.
Harold drew the curtain aside and stepped into the fitting area.
Claudia held the dress to her chest to keep it from slipping.
Were he and Molly really that comfortable with each other?
Harold moved behind her and took hold of the satin ties at her waist.
In the mirror, Claudia watched as he worked carefully, securing the sash.
He pulled the ribbon gently, one hand resting lightly against her side.
Claudia stiffened slightly, her breath catching.
“Too tight?” His low voice came from behind her.
“No,” she said, looking down.
“This one works,” Harold said, and their eyes met in the mirror.
“Okay.”
Claudia nodded.
This dress was much more modest.
She glanced at her neck again. Harold must have been drunk too last night–why else would he have ended up in her bed and left marks like that?
They spent the rest of the afternoon at Molly’s. Later, Harold took her out to dinner, but then got a call and had to leave. He dropped Claudia off before heading out.
That night, he texted to say he had a business trip for a couple of days and wouldn’t be back right away.
It worked out–Claudia had plenty to keep her busy too.

A few days after, while sorting through some old things Graham had left at Malus House, Claudia came across a beautiful wooden keepsake box.
It wasn’t locked. She opened it easily. Inside weren’t many items, and she took them out one by one.
On top lay a simple polished agate stone.
Beneath it was a blank check stamped with the Cypher Group corporate seal.
Under that, pressed in fine gilded paper, was a marriage contract.
A marriage contract.
