Chapter 777 The Fever
Claudia thought that was actually a pretty solid plan.

The security guard found a woman who had just clocked out–she happened to live in the neighborhood at the foot of the hill and agreed to lead the way down.
After getting Zander settled in the back seat, Claudia folded down the seat to make a small bed and draped her own jacket over him.
She shivered slightly in the cool night air.
Then she followed the woman on her motorcycle down the winding mountain road.
There weren’t many streetlights ahead, and the path was rough and full of sharp turns. Claudia’s hands trembled a little as she gripped the steering wheel.
It took a little over an hour to reach the bottom. By the time they pulled into the neighborhood, it was wel past midnight.
The woman led her to a local clinic run out of a home.
Claudia didn’t get out right away. She scanned the area first, and only when she spotted a plaque beside the door that read “Veteran’s Household” did she let herself relax a bit.
She stepped out, lifted Zander into her arms, and walked into the yard.
By then, the woman had already woken the medic and explained the situation. Lights flicked on throughout the house and yard.
“How did his fever get this high?” the medic asked, frowning.
Claudia’s voice shook. “I… I’m not sure.”
Zander stirred at the sound of her voice. “Mommy…”
The medic washed his hands at a small sink. “You’re his mother and you don’t know?”
Claudia quickly clarified, “He’s delirious from the fever–I’m not his mom. He’s confused…”
Zander started crying again, his voice already raspy from exhaustion.
The woman hurried over to soothe him. “Oh honey, it’s okay, don’t cry.”
Claudia pinched the bridge of her nose. Being called “Mom” like this felt like something out of a bad dream.
“We can sort that out later,” the woman said gently, stroking Zander’s hair. “Just calm him down for now. If he keeps crying like this, the neighbors might think someone’s kidnapping a child.”
Claudia’s head throbbed, but she didn’t have much choice.

She walked over and touched Zander’s warm cheek. “Alright, sweetie, no more crying. Fine… I’ll be your mommy for now.”
The medic rolled out a mat. “Lay him here on his stomach and lift his shirt.”
Zander flinched, crying as he turned to cling to Claudia. “No shots…”
“No shots, I promise. The doctor just needs to check you,” Claudia said softly, rubbing his back.
His face was flushed from the fever.
“If you behave, Mommy will keep holding you,” she added, and that seemed to get through to him.
He settled down, letting her guide him onto the mat. Claudia released a quiet sigh of relief.
The medic rubbed some menthol balm between his palms and began gently massaging Zander’s back.
The woman brought over a chair for Claudia to sit.
Claudia didn’t dare close her eyes. She was in an unfamiliar place with a child who wasn’t hers, and a low, persistent worry about her safety hummed in the back of her mind.
Even with the “Veteran’s Household” plaque and framed community service awards hanging inside, she kept her guard up.
She pulled out her phone and opened her messages with Harold. He’d texted her about an hour earlier, but she hadn’t had a chance to read it.
“Something came up tonight. Might not make it back. Get some rest.”
She typed back, “Okay.”
She wasn’t sure how to explain all this, but she sent him her location anyway. “I’m here. Heading back
soon.”
Harold was still awake. He called right away.
“Where are you?”
Claudia glanced at Zander, now lying quietly. “I came out here for the company retreat with Jaron. A kid spiked a fever, so I brought him down to see a doctor. I’ll be back soon.”
Harold’s voice tightened. “I’ll send Roger to pick you up.”
“No need–I’m about to leave.” Driving from the city would take him at least two or three hours.
Harold was quiet for a moment. “You’re still wearing the bracelet, right?”
Claudia looked at the sandalwood bracelet on her left wrist.
“Yeah, I’ve got it on.”

“Alright. Call me every half hour until you’re home.”
A warmth spread through Claudia’s chest. She suddenly missed him. “Okay.”

Neither of them spoke for a while, just staying on the line until another call came in on Harold’s end and they hung up.
