“It doesn’t start until around nine tonight. Zander and I will come pick you up then,” Harold said, wiping Zander’s mouth with a napkin.
Just like that, the plan was settled.
The next morning, Harold left with Zander, and Claudia drove over to Southhall Compound.
Darren looked her over carefully. “How are you feeling? Is the fever gone?”
Claudia smiled lightly. “All gone. I’m fine now.”
“Good. We’ll be counting on you later, then,” Darren said, handing her a folder of documents.
They were scheduled to meet with a foreign client that day—a Fandorian businessman interested in hosting an event at Southhall. The challenge was, he was notoriously particular, and Darren didn’t speak a word of Fandorian.
Sure, translation apps existed, and the assistant could handle it in a pinch, but this Fandorian client had made it clear he disliked the back–and–forth chatter of an interpreter during negotiations.
That was why Darren had called Claudia.
She spent the whole morning at Southhall with Darren, reviewing the proposal line by line. After lunch, they headed to the shooting range at the equestrian club.
Near the stables, Molly was riding with Keith. She glanced over and raised an eyebrow. “She’s here too?”
Keith followed her gaze and spotted Darren and Claudia walking toward the shooting area.
“You know her?” Keith asked.
Molly’s lips curved slightly. “We met not too long ago.”
Keith and Molly had been classmates in college. Today was Molly’s younger brother Zeke Davies‘ twenty- fifth birthday–he’d just returned from studying overseas and had invited a crowd of friends over.
Preparations were already underway around the property.

By the time Claudia and Darren reached the shooting range, the fussy Fandorian client had just finished his ride. He dismounted and noticed them approaching, his eyes lingering on Claudia.
“Claudia?” he called out, recognizing her almost instantly.
It took her a second, but then she placed him. “Lysandre?”
“It really is you!” Lysandre replied, and he had heavy accent.

Darren let out a quiet sigh of relief beside her. Knowing each other already smoothed things out considerably.
As they walked together, the assistant kept pace, quietly translating the conversation for Darren,
Their exchange wasn’t about business at all–just easy, familiar catch–up.

“How’s your archery these days? Feel like giving it a try?” Lysandre asked Claudia with a playful grin.
She smiled back. “Why not?”
Since Darren had mentioned they’d be at the equestrian club, Claudia had brought her riding clothes along.
Darren wasn’t much of a rider, so he didn’t join them. Instead, he made his way up to the second–floor lounge–an open–air space with a full view of the grounds.
No sooner had he stepped out than he saw Harold arriving with Zander.
Harold was wearing the T–shirt Claudia had bought for him.
“Mr. Cross,” Darren greeted.
He assumed Harold had come with Claudia, especially since Zander was with him.
“Mr. Kingston,” Harold returned the greeting.
“Darren!” Zander chirped happily, letting go of Harold’s hand and trotting over to Darren.
Darren bent down and scooped him up.
Zander still remembered the remote–control race car Darren had bought him last time.
Harold glanced toward Darren, then let his gaze drift toward Claudia in the distance.
She had a quiver on her back, a bow in one hand, and was leading a horse with the other, chatting and laughing with Lysandre.
Then she urged the horse into a gallop, released the reins, drew the bow, and let an arrow fly.
Claudia hadn’t lost her touch–the arrow struck the bull’s–eye cleanly.
“Not fair!” Lysandre pretended to pout. “You never let me win!”
“You haven’t improved a bit, Lysandre,” Claudia laughed, already nocking another arrow.
Harold watched, completely captivated.
He had secretly measured her while she slept just last night.
Darren observed Harold briefly, then turned his attention away.

“Daddy! I see Mommy!” Zander pointed toward Claudia in the distance.
“I see her too,” Harold replied softly.
