“Just come with me. You don’t need to bring anything.” Harold reached over and took her hand as they waited at the red light.
Claudia glanced down at his hand, then lifted her eyes to his face.
The light turned green.
He let go and focused back on the road.
When the car pulled up in front of Cross Manor, Harvey was already waiting by the gate, holding Zander in his arms.
They both stepped out of the car.
Harold handed the keys to Bruce, while Claudia walked slowly toward the house.
“Mommy!”
Zander squirmed out of Harvey’s hold and dashed over to Claudia.
She bent down, caught his little rushing frame, and scooped him up.
“See? Mommy kept the promise–I came back to see you,” Claudia said, gently booping his nose.
He giggled, clearly thrilled.
He’d been waiting by the entrance ever since he heard they were on their way home.
Zander had been well cared for–fair skin, round cheeks, and big bright eyes that made you just want to hug him and never let go.
Even as his stepmom, Claudia couldn’t help but adore him.
He clung to her happily.
Harold watched them for a moment, then turned and greeted Harvey with a nod. “Hey.”
Harvey’s eyes lingered on Harold briefly before he replied with a soft, “Mm–hmm.” Then he added, “Just dropped it off.”
He’d returned the wedding dresses earlier.
Harold gave a slight nod in acknowledgment.
Claudia, still holding Zander, walked over to stand beside Harold. She met Harvey’s gaze and spoke softly. “Hi.”
Harvey looked her way, offered another quiet “Mm–hmm,” then turned his attention back to Harold. “Let’s head inside.”

Harvey was Harold’s opposite in almost every way.

Where Harvey carried himself like a refined academic–calm, gentle, and putting others at ease Harold was all rugged edges and tough energy. The two brothers couldn’t have been more different.
Claudia sometimes wondered how the same mother raised sons who turned out so completely unalike.
“Here, Zander, come to Daddy. Mommy’s arms must be getting tired,” Harold said, reaching toward Claudia.
Zander pouted but didn’t resist.
Claudia didn’t argue either; she really was worn out. Last night had taken a lot out of her.
Harvey followed a few steps behind, watching as Claudia passed Zander over to Harold.
A little farther up the path, the family Doberman was wagging its tail excitedly but kept its distance, as if waiting for permission.
Claudia noticed it too. As they drew closer, she tentatively stretched out a hand. “Hey, buddy?”
That was what Harvey had called him last time.
The Doberman perked up at her voice, trotted over, and circled her feet happily, tail wagging nonstop.
Claudia didn’t seem so afraid of him now. She patted his head as they continued toward the house.
When they entered the living room, Damian and Isabelle were seated together, flipping through a wedding venue brochure and deep in discussion about locations and logistics.
They paused as the group walked in.
“Dad, Mom, we’re back,” Harold announced.
Claudia’s heart beat a little faster as she looked at Damian and Isabelle.
She hadn’t chosen Harvey. Would they be upset about that?
“Nice to see you,” she said, her voice noticeably softer.
Harold glanced at her and reached for her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
Damian observed them both. It seemed genuine feelings/had grown between them.
He pressed his lips together and addressed Claudia gently. “Last time, I didn’t explain everything because I didn’t want to pressure you. I wanted you to make your own choice. Honestly, whether you picked one of them or neither, we would have respected your decision.”
He took a step closer. “Now that you’ve chosen Harold, we welcome you into this family with open arms. But this son of mine…” Damian glanced at Harold, “I’m afraid he might not always know how to treat you right.”

Harold frowned. He was used to being the less favored one at home, but did they have to say it today?
Claudia let out a quiet sigh of relief.
They weren’t angry–in fact, they were already lightly scolding Harold on her behalf. She hadn’t expected
