Harold took her hand, helping her step down from the private jet. The island breeze swept through, carrying the salt of the ocean.
“This wasn’t on the original itinerary,” Claudia remarked, pausing on the tarmac. She remembered the schedule Harold had sent her–the wedding photoshoot was supposed to beat a vineyard upstate, not on some remote island.
Harold gave a slight nod.
Of course it wasn’t part of their plan. Harvey had arranged all of this for Claudia.
Everything that might have given her a sense of dignity, everything Harvey had intended to offer–Harold was now carrying it out, one item at a time.
The black wedding gown she wore: Harvey had originally wanted to take woodland–themed portraits with her in it. Now Harold was the one who had to see it through.
And this island–Harvey had bought it as an engagement gift for her.
Once they reached the ground, Claudia took a seat on a weathered wooden bench near the landing strip to catch her breath.
Harold stood a little distance away, his back turned toward her, facing the turquoise waves. He held a cigarette between his fingers -a rare sight. Claudia hardly ever saw him smoke; he didn’t even like the habit. He’d had to ask the photographer for one just now. After a few minutes, he stubbed out the cigarette, brushed the lingering scent from his jacket, and walked back over to her.
“Is everything okay?” Claudia asked gently. “Did your dad give you a hard time earlier? You seem… tense.”
“No, it’s nothing like that,” Harold replied with a soft smile. He reached for her hand and guided her toward the dense, green forest where the photoshoot was set up.
He was used to Damian’s stern tone. And Damian had a way of laying out his arguments so clearly that Harold always ended up feeling he deserved the scolding.
“You just looked so solemn out there,” Claudia said. She wasn’t great with comforting words. “But honestly, having someone care enough to call you out… that’s a good thing. I kind of wish I had someone who’d do that for me.”
“Who says no one ever calls you out?” Harold’s brows drew together slightly. Where was she going with the? Ever since they’d gotten together, she’d been so cautious, always tiptoeing around, afraid of stepping on anyone’s, toes.
He kept his voice even. “I do. Your in–laws do. Even Harvey does.”
The moment he mentioned Harvey, Harold’s expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
“Then why do you seem upset? Is it because of me?” Claudia stopped walking
He’d gone straight for a cigarette right after they landed—she could tell something was weighing on him.
Harold paused, searching for words. “This island… it’s yours. The title transfer is just taking some paperwork. More complicated than I thought.”
He’d invented the excuse on the spot.

This island is for me?” Claudia’s eyes widened in genuine surprise.
“Yes, that’s right.”
Harold nodded and continued leading her forward, their hands still linked.
Behind them, the two assistants holding up the train of her dress exchanged a quick glance but stayed silent.
Now it was Claudia who felt overwhelmed.
The Cross family’s generosity toward her went beyond anything she could’ve imagined.
What had her own family, the Bowmans, ever done for the Crosses to deserve this?
The question lingered in her mind.
She’d asked Harold once before, but he’d brushed it off as some old–family history he wasn’t fully clear on.

She figured she’d have to wait until the next family gathering back home to ask his grandparents, Louis and Regina, about it.
She glanced up at him suddenly. “People don’t really do arranged marriages much around here. How come you were open to it?”
“Claudia, you’re a catch. I had someone run the numbers–you bring good fortune to your husband,” Harold said, keeping his tone completely serious.
She stared at him, stunned. Harold–modern, educated, one of the most eligible bachelors in their circle–actually buying into that kind of superstition?
She didn’t see how she’d brought him any luck at all.
“Don’t you feel short–changed?” she murmured under her breath. “You gave me a net loss than a lucky break.”
a trust fund, now an island… It feels more like
“Harvey’s card had seven billion dollars on it. And this island?” Harold let out a low chuckle. “Who even knows its worth. Tell me that’s not luck. Marrying you basically let me retire early.”
Claudia was speechless.
Harvey really was on another level when it came to generosity.
“Harvey is incredibly wealthy.”
“Having second thoughts?” Harold looked at her intently.
“No, not at all. Honestly, I’m glad things didn’t work out with him. He’s such a good man. If he couldn’t marry the person he really loved because of me, I’d never forgive myself.”
Harold fell quiet. His expression grew heavier.
“Alright, you two move in a little closer. Don’t look at me, look at each other”
The photographer lifted his camera, adjusting the lens carefully.
Harold slid his arm around her waist, his hand settling warmly on the small of her back. Claudia rested her palm lightly on his
