That morning, he’d received a text from Jaron saying Claudia would be stopping by to help out, so he decided to swing by and see how things were going.
Right then, Claudia was standing beside Robin.
Robin hardly dared to breathe. His hand, which held the brush for drawing spirals, had already begun to tremble slightly.
“You’ll strain your arm if you keep using it like that–try moving from the wrist instead.”
Claudia picked up another brush nearby, dipped it in ink, and demonstrated on a blank sheet.
Robin stole a glance at her.
It seemed as though Claudia was meeting him for the first time–there wasn’t a trace of hostility in her
manner.
“Got it?” Claudia looked toward him.
“Yeah, got it,” Robin replied, quickly shifting his eyes away.
He was a quick learner, really–just usually unmotivated. After one quick demo from Claudia, he had it down.
Nolan watched from outside the window. “So he only behaves for certain people…”
He knew a little about Robin’s situation.
When Keith had tried teaching him before, Robin showed zero respect–could barely even hold the brush steady.
But now, with Claudia there, from the moment class started right up to the present, Robin sat up straight, listened to every word she said, and even his handwriting looked noticeably better.
Claudia even used his work as an example a couple of times.
During the main lesson, Claudia took her seat at the desk. The document camera projected her motions onto the screen, and everyone could clearly see her demonstrating in cursive script. She explained each movement as she wrote.
Robin watched the screen, then let his gaze drift back to Claudia.
The morning sun was especially bright, spilling over her shoulders and hair, wrapping her in a soft, warm light.
Robin rested his chin in his hand, kept his eyes on her, and let a faint smile touch the corner of his mouth.
He didn’t look away until Claudia finished her explanation. Only then did he get serious and start practicing

Class was nearly over. Before dismissing everyone, Claudia took time to check each student’s practice sheets.
And Robin–who usually bolted before the bell even rang–today waited until Claudia had reviewed everyone else’s work before bringing his own sheet up to her desk.
“You’re free to go now,” Claudia said, giving his work a brief look.
Robin’s strokes were quite neat. He clearly was a bright kid, just wrapped in a whole lot of rebellious attitude.
“Ms. Bowman, I still don’t think it’s good enough.”
“Then take it home and practice some more,” Claudia replied.
“Ms. Bowman, you should teach me yourself.”
Claudia glanced up at him, surprised.
Robin smiled. Before she could even respond, he pulled a chair over beside her. “You’re playing favorites. I‘ want to feel how you guide the brush too.”
Earlier, Claudia had gently guided a female student’s hand to demonstrate the stroke. She’d helped several of the boys too–but when it came to Robin, she hadn’t.
“You already know what to do. No need.” She stood and began gathering her things.
Robin was older than the other boys, and Claudia wasn’t that much older than him. Since he clearly understood the technique, she saw no reason to give him special treatment.
“Bye, Ms. Bowman!” A girl nearby finished packing up and called out cheerfully.
Claudia smiled. “Take care.”
Robin felt a prick of irritation. “Ms. Bowman, I really think you should teach me.”
Claudia looked at him again. His expression was earnest, almost insistent.
She glanced at the inkwell and brush still on the desk. “Help me clean up, and I’ll show you.”
The corner of his mouth lifted. “Deal.”
Claudia walked over. Robin quickly grabbed his brush and sat up straight, attentive.
She went over the key points of the hook stroke once more. Robin nodded along, studying her movements with genuine focus.
Randall thought it was strange that Robin hadn’t come downstairs yet, so he headed up to check. That was when he saw Claudia standing close to Robin, her hand gently guiding his as she demonstrated the brush
movement.

He paused by the doorway, watching them with a mix of disbelief and curiosity.

“Before class tomorrow afternoon, fill two practice sheets and bring them to me,” Claudia said, releasing
his hand.
Robin nodded eagerly. “Thank you, Ms. Bowman!”
“And remember to rinse your brush properly,” she added.
