Chapter 832 Nightmares
He took a seat beside the bed and reached over to touch her forehead, which was burning with fever.
“Want to sit up and have some soup?”
Claudia murmured a soft, “Mhm.”
He adjusted the bed to raise her head. “Just broth, or with chicken and noodles?”.
“Broth,” she whispered, feeling utterly drained, as if even speaking required more strength than she ha
Harold opened the thermos, poured a small bowl of clear chicken broth, and prepared to help her drink it.
Claudia lifted a hand weakly. “I can manage…”
“Just open your mouth,” Harold said gently. He brought the spoon to his own lips first to test the temperature, then carefully held it to hers.
Claudia didn’t protest further and let him feed her.
She hadn’t eaten much all day and was hungry, but her stomach still felt uneasy. After finishing the bowl, she sank back into the pillows to rest.
As soon as she drifted off, the memories from the previous evening rushed back.
After stepping into the elevator, she had been holding Harold’s jacket, quietly thinking about what time they should wake up to watch the sunrise over the ocean together. Then the elevator doors opened.
As she walked out, she came face to face with Loretta’s older brother, Jason Flood.
He had been drinking. Still furious about Loretta’s fall into the water that night, seeing Claudia only intensified his anger.
“Claudia, stop right there,” he said, his voice low and steady.
Claudia could see the dangerous gleam in his eyes. She knew some basic self–defense, but against a man well over six feet tall, she stood little chance.

Hearing him call her name, a wave of dread washed over her. She turned and ran.
Jason chased her down and trapped her against the railing.
Now, back in the hospital bed, Claudia clenched Harold’s hand tightly in her sleep.
Harold had just dozed off when he felt her grip tighten, snapping him awake immediately.
“Shhh, it’s okay…” he whispered.
But Claudia remained trapped in her nightmare.

Tears streamned down her cheeks. Sitting beside her, Harold frowned, gently wiping the tears away with his thumb.
“Don’t be scared, I’m right here,” he whispered.
Claudia had heard those words before–from the man who had pulled her from the water, his voice soft but firm in her ear.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here!” A man’s voice, both familiar and unfamiliar, echoed in her memory.
In the moments after she fell into the water, she had swallowed several mouthfuls of seawater before she could even react. But then, a pair of strong arms lifted her upward.
Finally, she could breathe again.
The man held her close, swimming and pulling them both toward the shore.
Once on the sand, she coughed up what felt like endless amounts of seawater, her body convulsing until she thought she had nothing left inside.
By the time she could breathe steadily again, the man who saved her was already walking away, his figure fading under the moonlight.
Claudia jerked awake from the dream, her breathing ragged.
She found Harold gently stroking her cheek, his voice soothing.
“Easy now, it’s over…”
Suddenly, tears burst from her eyes.
“Harold!” She sat up and threw her arms around him, holding on tightly.
Harold wrapped his arms around her, one hand rubbing the back of her head while the other patted her back gently. “It’s okay. You’re safe now.”
She couldn’t stop crying, only clinging to him more desperately.
It took a while for her to calm down. When she finally relaxed, Harold noticed her skin felt even warmer- her fever had spiked again.

They sat on a bench under a tree just outside the hospital entrance. A mild wind rustled the leaves above them, creating a gentle, hushed sound.
Claudia leaned her head against Harold’s shoulder and, feeling finally at ease, quietly slipped back into sleep.
Harold rested his chin lightly on top of her head, his arm holding her shoulder securely. It was then that his eyes locked with Keith’s, who had just wheeled herself out into the courtyard.
For a moment, Keith looked startled.
