Shouldn’t people just be true to themselves?

Isabelle smiled at Claudia’s response. “It’s not that we raised him to be perfect. It’s just that everything he does seems to work for you, so you see the good in him.”
Claudia still found that a little hard to wrap her head around.
Taking the empty bowl from her hands, Isabelle refilled it with more soup. “Do you think Harold is only kind to you out of some sense of duty?” she asked gently.
Claudia met her gaze.
Speaking sincerely, Isabelle went on, “You can’t force yourself to care for someone. Even when you don’t say it out loud, it shows. If you keep holding yourself back because of some imagined burden, you might miss out on something really special.”
“Isabelle,” Claudia began, looking at her thoughtfully, “how did you know you were in love with Damian?”
“He was handsome. That face alone could make me smile for days.” Isabelle passed the bowl back to her with a playful grin.
Claudia chuckled. “You’re that into looks?”
“I’m only human, of course I am. Marriage is a lifetime thing. Finding someone attractive, stable, and who treats you right–that’s not a given for everyone.”
“Everyone says he had quite the dating history before you. Guess it’s true.”
Pressing her lips together in a smile, Isabelle nodded. “So you’ve heard about that too.”
“Harold mentioned it.”
“He was exceptional. It’s no surprise people were drawn to him.”
“But in the end, he only had eyes for you.” Claudia was genuinely curious about their story.
Harold’s parents shared the kind of romance that many people dreamed of.
She wondered if Harold ever felt the same way she did–like he, too, just wanted something real and steady between them.
“When it comes to feelings, it only really counts when both people are moving toward each other.”
Just as Isabelle finished speaking, the two men wrapped up their conversation outside and stepped back
into the room.
Lost in thought over what that meant, Claudia stayed quiet and focused on her soup.
Harold noticed her flushed earlobes and wondered what Isabelle had been telling her.

“We’ll come pick you both up tomorrow when she’s discharged.” Isabelle said to Harold.
“No need. It’s too much back–and–forth.” Harold glanced toward Claudia, who was finishing the last of her
soup.
“Alright, we’ll follow your lead then.” Isabelle looked over at Damian.
He gave a slight nod.
Turning back to Claudia, Isabelle said warmly, “You get some proper rest now. We’re going to head home.”
Claudia nodded quietly, then paused. “How’s Zander doing at home?”
It had been a while since she’d seen her younger brother.
Last time was over a video call with Isabelle.
Lately, Damian and Isabelle had been taking him along everywhere, and he’d been running around like a kid set free–having the time of his life.
“Just like this one here–stubborn as a mule…” Damian started, gesturing toward Harold.
Harold clicked his tongue lightly.
Isabelle gave her husband’s arm a gentle pinch.
Damian let out a soft hiss, then quickly added, “Stubborn, yeah, but he listens when it counts. Don’t worry about him.”
Claudia knew Zander was a good kid at heart, but he definitely had that spirited, adventurous side too.
He knew how to have fun, but he also knew when to pay attention.
Damian often brought him along to help out with small tasks. In fact, some of the photos Damian and Isabelle had together were actually taken by Zander.
Frowning slightly, Harold said quietly to Isabelle, “Mom, please just take him with you…”
Damian shot him a look that said how dare you, but didn’t push it further.
Isabelle couldn’t help but laugh and quickly guided Damian out of the room.
Watching the whole exchange, Claudia found herself smiling.
After Damian and Isabelle left, the door clicked shut, leaving the two of them alone in the quiet hospital
room
Harold studied her. Claudia shifted slightly, avoiding his gaze.
You and Mom really hit it off.”

Claudia nodded. “Yeah. She’s really easy to talk to.”

“Did she tell you not to let me have my way too much?” Harold asked, a faint smile touching his lips.
“No. She said…”
That with feelings, it only means something when both people are moving toward each other.
She looked at Harold but felt too shy to say it out loud.
“Said what?” he pressed gently.
