It was just that now Harvey had his son with him, and Harold didn’t feel right heading out of town with a child in tow. He had zero experience with kidstaking one along on a business trip sounded like a recipe for disaster.

Now that Zander was a little older and surrounded by the whole Cross family, he hardly wanted to stay with the nanny anymore.

He’d latch onto any Cross family member he could find, and now that he was with Harvey/it seemed like he’d found a brandnew playmate. He couldn’t have been happier.

Harold heard Harvey say he was pushing the trip back by two days to wrap things up with the Flood family first. Harold wondered whether he should just look after Zander in the meantime.

He’d already caused Harvey enough troubleespecially with the whole Claudia situation. He really didnwant to burden Harvey any further.

-And Claudia was feeling guilty too. Her falling into the water had ended up bringing the entire Cross

family back.

Whenever she thought about it, her heart sank a little deeper. They had been so good to her; she couldn’t find a single thing to complain about.

When Harold was nearly finished eating, he glanced over and noticed the halfeaten food still sitting in her plate. She seemed lost in thought again, probably wondering where she’d gone wrong.

Harold could read her like a book, and his brow furrowed. What’s going through your head now?

I can’t finish it,” she made up quickly.

Harold looked at her, picked up the leftover from her plate, and popped it into his own mouth. Then he said, Let’s head home.

They returned to Serene Manor.

As soon as Claudia stepped inside, Harold pulled her slippers from the entryway closet, knelt down, and helped her into them. After that, he carried the fresh groceries they’d picked up downstairs into the kitchen.

Claudia assumed he would start prepping right away, but instead Harold went back to the guest room to changeor partly change, anyway. He walked back out without a shirt on, still wearing his pants.

Claudia turned on the kitchen faucet and was about to rinse the vegetables when someone suddenly moved behind her and gently pulled her hand back.

She jumped slightly, then glanced sideways and found herself facetoface with his bare torsotoned muscles that seemed to radiate pure masculinity.

I was only teasing earlier. Didn’t actually expect you to jump in and help,Harold said with a light chuckle.

There was no way he was going to let Claudia, who’d just gotten out of the hospital, do any work. If Damian found out, a scolding would be the least of itand honestly, Harold didn’t want her lifting a finger

anyway.

I don’t have anything else to do,she replied.

If you’ve got nothing to do, then relax. Don’t mess up my rhythm,Harold said, ruffling her hair before gently steering her aside.

Claudia had no choice but to settle onto the sofa. She grabbed a random book from the shelf, curled up crosslegged, and kept stealing glances toward the kitchen.

At one point she quietly pulled out her phone and snapped a picture of himshirtless, wearing a black apron, focused on chopping meat.

The kitchen was openconcept, with a large window above the stove. The nearnoon sunlight streamed in, casting a warm golden glow over his bronze skin.

In that light he seemed illuminated, the lines of his muscles standing out even more distinctly. As he worked, the movement of his arms showed just the right kind of strength.

Harold was concentrating on what he was doing, but somehow he chose that moment to look overand caught her redhanded with her phone raised.

Right as he turned, Claudia pressed the shutter.

A sudden fronton shot filled her screen.

She quickly lowered the phone.

Harold saw her sneaky little move and couldn’t help but laugh softly before returning to his prep work.

Claudia couldn’t just sit still in the living room after that. She wandered aimlessly around the penthouse until she eventually ended up in the study.

The room had plain, basic furniture and hardly looked like a home office at all. Scattered across the desk were a few of Claudia’s art tools.

She pulled out a chair, grabbed a sheet of textured art paper, dampened her paintbrush, and dipped its tip gently into bottled ink.

Her thoughts drifted back to the man who had saved her that night.

He had been like a beam of light, pulling her back up just as she was sinking beneath the surface.

Claudia actually knew how to swim, but her side had been hurt earlier when Jason grabbed her. Add to that the shock of hitting the cold seawater when she fellshe hadn’t been able to react in time.

She only started coming back to her senses when she was being dragged toward shore.

A blurry face had reflected in her dazed pupils.
