Zander, perched up on Harold’s other arm, watched and cheered, “Daddy, you’re a superhero!”

Harold glanced at him with a playful grin. “Oh, really?”

“Put me down,” Claudia said softly, tapping his shoulder.

Harold looked smug. “No way.”

“People are staring…”

“Let them stare.”

He carried them both across the plaza, one on each arm, drawing curious glances from passersby. He only set Claudia down after she insisted.

They headed toward a few trendy spots nearby that were all over Instagram. Grabbing snacks and wandering around, Zander was having an absolute blast. It felt like the first time he had both his mom and dad together like this.

Claudia felt more relaxed than she had in weeks. Usually, it was just her two closest girlfriends keeping her company, and even then they only managed to meet up once in a blue moon. But ever since Harold had been around more, it seemed like he surprised her every single day.

Whenever he came back, he’d sneak some little thing from behind his back–a novel she’d mentioned, a fresh smoothie, a single rose, sometimes a handmade trinket. Any free moment he had, he made sure to spend it with her. It wasn’t anything grand, but to Claudia, it meant the world.

Like today–even though they were flying back tomorrow, he’d still driven two hours just to meet up with them.

“Daddy, it’s gonna drip,” Zander said, holding up his ice cream cone.

Harold crouched down and took a bite of the melting part.

They were sitting on a bench now. Claudia was slowly working through the mousse cake Harold had just bought her, while Zander swung his legs and savored his ice cream.

It dawned on Claudia that maybe Harold just wanted her to keep feeding him. She took another small bite herself, then scooped one more and lifted it to his mouth.

Sure enough, he ate it. She hid a smile.

“Daddy, I gotta pee,” Zander piped up, looking up just in time to see Claudia feeding Harold from above his head.

“Daddy’s being silly–needs Mommy to feed him,” he mumbled. “He’s so grown up and still needs help eating.”

Claudia pressed her lips together to keep from grinning.

Harold finished the cake and shot Zander a mock–stern look. “You little troublemaker.”

“Daddy, I really gotta go.”

“Alright, let’s head inside.” Harold turned to Claudia. “Wait here for us?”

“Sure.”

The mall restrooms were just past the entrance. Claudia had used them earlier, and after walking around so long, she was starting to feel tired.

Harold lifted Zander and carried him toward the doors. Claudia finished the last bite of cake and stayed on the bench, waiting.

Just then, her phone buzzed. A text from Chelsea.

“Claudia, my case is actually looking up!
