Chapter 858 Heart–Shaped Flags
She slipped into the space beside Dolores, who shifted over instinctively–promptly nudging Harvey aside in the process.
Dolores caught her balance quickly and put a little more distance between them.
Once, she hadn’t been the least bit intimidated by him. But after ending up on his bad side these past few days, she figured it was smarter to keep her distance–otherwise, she risked another sharp scolding or even a deduction from her paycheck.
Harvey glanced down at Dolores, now right in front of him. The fresh, subtly sweet scent that hung around her drifted toward him, distracting in a way he hadn’t expected.
Just then Harold moved closer.
“Did you tell her?” he asked quietly.
Harvey stayed silent, so Harold didn’t press further.
If that piece of news got out, this Thanksgiving was going to be… complicated.
Harold’s eyes drifted toward Dolores. She was whispering with Henrietta, the two occasionally pulling Claudia into their hushed conversation.
The elevator buzzed with the soft chatter of the three women.
Then Harvey looked over at Harold, who got the clear sense something was on his mind.
Harvey opened his mouth as if to speak, but seemed to think better of it.
When the elevator doors finally slid open and everyone began filing out, Harold and Harvey lingered at the back.
In a low voice, Harvey said, “Don’t hurt her.”
Harold was caught off guard.
Claudia had come home last night wearing Harvey’s jacket–so Harvey definitely knew about that.
And earlier, Harold had noticed Claudia hadn’t fully concealed a few marks on her neck. Harvey must have put two and two together and drawn the wrong conclusion.
“Don’t worry,” Harold replied steadily. “I won’t.”
Harvey didn’t add anything else.
Truth was, there wasn’t much more he could say. It wasn’t really his business anymore.
By the time they reached the town square, a sizable crowd had already gathered.

“Need me to take him?” Harvey offered, nodding toward little Zander in Harold’s arms.

“I’ve got him,” Harold answered, adjusting the boy on one hip while his other hand found Claudia’s. Dolores and Henrietta, being shorter, positioned themselves right in front.
The two were fiddling with something before they suddenly turned around, each now sporting a small heart–shaped flag sticker on one cheek.
“Here–everybody gets one!” Henrietta passed a few to Dolores, and together they began handing them
oul.
When Dolores stepped in front of Harvey, she felt a flicker of nerves.
After all, this was her boss.
Harvey eyed the sticker in her hand and bent his head slightly toward her.
Dolores peeled one off, carefully smoothed it onto his left cheek, and gave it a gentle press.
From that close, he could take in the light dusting of makeup on her face, every tiny pore visible under the morning light. Her lips were a soft, jelly–like pink, and even her breath carried a faint, sweet trace.
After she finished with Harvey, she moved to place one on Howard–but Harvey reached over and took the remaining stickers from her hand.
“I’ll handle it.” he said.
“Oh… okay.” Dolores found it a little odd, but handed them over without objection.
Harold watched the exchange, then glanced at Claudia.
Soon everyone wore a sticker.
Henrietta then produced a handful of miniature flags, passing them around one by one.
When Zander received his, he waved it excitedly.
His high–pitched little voice rang out, and several people nearby chuckled and echoed the phrase.
Harold hoisted the boy up onto his shoulders.
They stood waiting a while longer.
The morning sun peeked through scattered cloud cover, golden rays drifting through thin lingering mist to drape the town plaza in soft warmth.
A crisp brass march melody drifted on the breeze, paired with the measured, synchronized tramp of boots drawing nearer.
The honor guard rounded into view, standards borne aloft as they marched in formal formation toward

the memorial monument.
Dolores had her phone out, recording while she watched.
Harold nudged Harvey subtly and tilted his chin to the side, directing his gaze.
Not too far off, Carson and Jessica stood hand in hand–and were now sharing a kiss right there.
Harvey’s brow furrowed.
Those two really had no sense of occasion.
His eyes drifted back to Dolores, still focused ahead.

Dolores wondered if he’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed today.
Harvey paid her no mind. While her attention remained on the rising flag, he turned the camera toward Carson and Jessica and zoomed in.
A faint smirk touched Harold’s lips.
A light breeze swept across the square. The flag caught the wind, climbing steadily until it snapped proudly at the top of the pole.
Harvey slipped the phone into his own pocket.
