Amanda and Quentin felt more relaxed, while Dolores had one less thing to worry about. Claudia hadn’t considered that perspective before, so she simply nodded in agreement.
Having been distant from the idea of family for so long, there were certain details she tended to overlook.
After returning from their shopping trip, everyone gathered and settled into a coordinated, busy rhythm
Every Thanksgiving, Damian and Isabelle took charge of most of the cooking, though they always made sure to involve the whole family in the preparations. They believed that was what truly made the holiday feel like home.
Harvey, who was usually tied up with work, silenced all his business calls that evening–no one dared disturb him at a time like this. Even Henrietta, who came from considerable wealth, pitched in to help set things up.
During dinner, Henrietta and the others all received Thanksgiving greetings from Dolores via text. Only Harvey’s phone stayed quiet.
Henrietta leaned over and asked Harold, “Did you get a message from Dolores too? She sent me a Venmo. How about you?”
Just hearing Dolores‘ name put Harvey on edge. He glanced at his phone. In previous years, he’d always gotten holiday texts from her, and each time he’d ended up sending her money through Venmo. This time, though, his device hadn’t made a sound.
Claudia shot a look toward Harvey. He kept eating calmly, as if the conversation held no interest for him.
Once dinner was over, Harvey set up a projector out in the yard. The family spent the evening outside, grilling, watching a movie, and chatting. Harold took over the porch swing Henrietta had been using and pulled Claudia down to sit beside him.
“You’re shameless,” Henrietta grumbled.
“You’re so proper, yet you still lost the seat,” Harold teased back smugly, then added, “Claudia wants some skewers.”
“You…” Henrietta hesitated, caught between refusing and giving in.
Claudia tugged at Harold’s sleeve. “I didn’t say-”
“You like them.” Harold finished for her, leaving her both/annoyed and amused.
Harvey chuckled as he watched their back–and–forth. He piled a handful of grilled skewers onto a plate and passed it to Henrietta. “Share these around.”
Henrietta took the plate, snapped a quick photo, and sent it to Dolores.
“My brother grilled these. Want some?”

After hitting send, she walked around handing out the skewers. Harold passed one to Claudia, who accepted it with a smile.
Once Henrietta had distributed everything, she had Harvey grill another large batch. Then she announced she was stepping out for a bit and would be right back.
As Harvey handed her the fresh skewers, he noticed her phone screen was still lit up–Dolores‘ bright profile photo staring back. He wasn’t sure what they were messaging about, but he had a pretty good idea.
He smiled to himself and didn’t call her out.
A foodie just needs her fix. She can deal with being mad once she’s eaten.
Henrietta hurried out, called a delivery driver, packed everything up, and sent it off as an express shipment.
Dolores, sitting on her bed and peering downstairs while waiting for the food, texted back.
“You’re the best, sending me treats. Has your big brother been heartbroken lately? He keeps picking on me.”
Henrietta read the message and muttered under her breath, “He’s not heartbroken. You’re about to be. Just enjoy it. I bet you won’t have much appetite for the next week.”
She walked back into the yard.
Whenever Henrietta visited her grandma’s place, she always talked Harvey into grilling. Harvey only ever put work aside when he was at his grandma’s house–and his grilling skills were top–notch.
Henrietta usually managed to send some back for herself to enjoy later. She used to do it openly, but nowadays she had to be sneakier about it.
When she returned, Claudia noticed her hands were empty.
How could she have finished that whole batch in just a few minutes?
She nudged Harold and glanced toward Henrietta.
“She probably had them delivered to her best friend,” Harold said, already used to her ways. He then | glanced over at Harvey, who was still focused on grilling.
“Harvey doesn’t seem upset,” Claudia remarked.
“He rarely gets mad,” Harold replied, tilting his chin toward his own arm. “Didn’t even get angry when he got bitten.”
Claudia couldn’t help but laugh. “Dolores really had the nerve to bite him, huh.”
That year, Claudia experienced a perfect Thanksgiving with the Cross family out in the countryside.
In the past, Graham used to take her traveling over the holiday–never staying home, often gone for ten
