Claudia instinctively stepped back, but he closed the distance, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her firmly against him.

“Well?” he asked, a playful grin on his face.

Her cheeks flushed. When she felt something hard press against her stomach, she quickly tried to push him away. “I’m heading out…”

Harold chuckled, not loosening his hold. “Bold enough to start something but not to follow through? Next time just go for it–it’s all yours anyway.”

Her face burned. She swatted at his chest until he finally eased up, releasing her with an amused look as she hurried out of the room, flustered.

Harold shook his head lightly, still smiling to himself, then made his way to the bathroom to freshen up.

Once outside, Claudia cupped her warm cheeks with both hands, fanning herself a little as she tried to cool down. It took a moment for her composure to return before she stepped further into the common

area.

The living room was quiet.

Out on the patio, Henrietta and Zander were walking the two pet geese, laughter drifting through the open door. Claudia wandered over and watched them enjoying the morning.

“Mommy, look–they’re being so good!” Zander announced proudly.

Claudia smiled softly.

Megan brought her a glass of milk. Taking it, Claudia settled into a nearby chair, sipping quietly as she observed the scene.

“Claudia,” Henrietta called out. She set down the handful of lettuce leaves she’d been feeding the geese and walked inside.

“Yeah?” Claudia replied between small bites of a breakfast pastry.

Henrietta dropped onto the couch beside her and lowered her voice. “I managed to talk my brother into handing over his black card. We should go shopping later

Claudia glanced at her smug expression. “You actually got it out of him?”

“No way he’d just give it if I asked straight up. I told him I wanted to buy you a wedding gift–that did the trick.” Henrietta leaned in conspiratorially. “And I really am getting you something, so don’t even think about refusing. If you do, I might never get another chance like this.”

Claudia couldn’t help but laugh.

She used to assume Henrietta had everything handed to her, never realizing how tightly Harvey kept a leash on her spending.

Ever since Harvey took over the family finances, their parents had stepped back from managing the household accounts–even Henrietta’s allowances fell under his control.

Harvey wasn’t one to play favorites, and Harold was no different.

Henrietta often had to sweet–talk or scheme her way into extra funds. Sometimes, when her monthly budget ran low, she just had to tough it out until the next cycle.

This time, though, using Claudia’s name to score the black card was a win. She was absolutely planning to make the most of it today.

Henrietta was already itching to leave. “Where’s your husband? Still in bed? When are we heading out?”

“When’s Dolores coming?” Claudia asked.

“She’s already on her way. Heard she cut ties with my brother and quit her job. If she finds out about Carson, she’s gonna regret it big time.”

Claudia nodded slowly. “What did your brother say?”

“Nothing, really.”

Henrietta studied her nails briefly, then shot Claudia a look. “So… what’s our game plan?”

Claudia didn’t have much experience plotting this kind of thing.

“Want me to take the lead?” Henrietta offered, her eyes bright and scheming.

“Fine, we’ll follow your play,” Claudia agreed. Her main role was just to keep Henrietta from going overboard.

“Don’t let her call all the shots.” Harold’s voice cut in as he walked into the room.

“Hey, don’t expose me like that,” Henrietta grumbled.

She used to be a little intimidated by Harold, but with Claudia around, she’d grown bolder–even talking back sometimes. And since Harold tended to defer to Claudia, he usually held his temper in her presence.

“Expose you? Since when did you even have a leg to stand on?” Harold picked up a sandwich from the counter and took a bite before strolling toward the patio, where Zander was still carefully feeding lettuce to the geese under Megan’s watchful eye.

Henrietta muttered something under her breath. Nothing good ever came out of his mouth when he was like this.

She tugged lightly on Claudia’s sleeve, signaling they should hurry up and go–before Harold decided to call her out again.
