Henrietta studied it and remarked, “Couldn’t you pick something a bit more upscale?”

“With what money? More upscale? Are you trying to get me in trouble?”

Dolores stared at her. “So you want me to use your brother’s money to buy him a gift… to apologize to him?”

Henrietta couldn’t help laughing. “He’ll never know. It’s not a big deal anyway.”

“That’s kind of shady. If he ever found out, he’d be seriously annoyed,” Claudia said with a light chuckle She was glancing around nearby, wondering whether she should pick something up for Harold too.

Henrietta slung an arm around Dolores‘ shoulder. “He deserves to be a little annoyed, don’t you think?”

Dolores gave a guilty nod.

Poor Harvey–Henrietta had talked him into handing over his card, and now she was planning to use his own money to buy him a sorry gift.

In the end, he’d basically be buying his own consolation present.

“Let me look around a little more,” Dolores said, stepping away to browse further down the aisle.

Henrietta moved closer to Claudia and kept her voice low. “She’s in better spirits now. Who knows how hard she’ll take it later when she finds out what really happened.”

Claudia glanced over at Dolores, who was carefully examining another/gift option. “Harvey really does care

about her.”

“It’s partly because of me, too. There was this guy at school who kept following me around. One afternoon he tried to corner me near the lockers, and Dolores stepped in and shoved him. The guy got so mad he was about to swing at us.”

Henrietta met Claudia’s eyes. “Right then, Harvey showed up to pick me up. So he walked right into the whole thing.”

“No wonder,” Claudia said softly.

Henrietta let out a sigh. “After that, Harold put me in a self–defense class. But he was right–with people like that, you have to stand your ground. Sometimes one good scare is all it takes to make them back off for good.”

Claudia began to understand why Harold was so strict with Henrietta’s safety.

“Hey, did you find anything for Harold?” Henrietta asked curiously.

“I haven’t decided yet,” Claudia replied, sounding a little unsure.

The last time she’d picked out clothes for him, she’d gone with Darren–mainly to get him to stop wearing
