Chapter 899 How to Know You Like Someone
“You really have a type, don’t you? So getting hitched is all about finding someone who games well? Should I sign you up for a dating app instead?”
Harvey listened to Damian ranting on the other end of the line and couldn’t help but smile. “Dad, how did you and Mom end up together?”
Joseph, sitting nearby, glanced at Harvey and chuckled. “He bulldozed his way in. Set up this whole elaborate scheme to win her over. Your mom didn’t stand a chance–it was basically a takeover.”
Damian’s voice crackled through the speaker, suddenly defensive. “Hey, Joseph, we’re two of a kind. Don’t act like you’re above it!”
Harvey laughed and ended the call.
He turned and settled onto a barstool. Joseph poured him another drink.
“Seriously, Joseph… how do you know if you’re into someone?”
The question caught Joseph off guard. He paused, letting his mind drift back to those early days with Grace.
“It’s hard to put into words,” he began slowly. “You feel down when she’s upset, you light up when she’s happy. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, she just pops into your head out of nowhere. When that happens… yeah, she’s probably got a place in your heart.”
Harvey took another sip of his drink.
He wasn’t sure he fully understood.
“Then how do you know if she’s into you?”
Joseph burst out laughing. “Why worry about whether she likes you or not? Just figure out if you like her first. If you do, go for it–win her over! If she’s not feeling it, find a way to change her mind!
“Look, you’ve got the looks, the money, you’re in shape. You don’t gamble, don’t cheat, don’t play around. Plenty of women would be lucky to have you! Half the time, all you’d need to do is show up! You don’t even have to try that hard, you get me?”
Harvey fell silent.
His cheeks flushed slightly, and he took another small sip.
“You should ask your dad for tips. Back when he was chasing your mom, he had no shame…”
Joseph leaned in and kept his voice low, sharing story after story, but Harvey barely registered most of it.
He’d been like that with Claudia once too–everything he did was for her.
That was why it had stung, that faint pang of disappointment, when she’d first chosen Harold.
But after just a few months, watching how naturally she and Harold fit together, that feeling had shifted into something else–something he couldn’t quite name.
Harold was better for her, plain and simple.
Maybe what Harvey had felt was just a sense of responsibility mixed with gratitude, a way of making up for his own guilt. Maybe that had fooled him into thinking it was more than it was.
He didn’t feel heartbroken, not really. If anything, it was more like… relief.
“Mr. Cross…”
Just then, a soft, pleasant voice pulled him from his thoughts.
He glanced over. It was Dolores.
For some reason, his heart gave an unexpected flutter.
“I already dropped the contract off with Mr. Lopez. Was there something else you needed done?” she asked gently. “Or… is there an issue with it?”
She assumed Harvey had come after her because something was wrong with the paperwork.
