Jupiter put on his big tough guy act. “I’m not carrying those. Give them to Milka.”
Milka blinked at the bouquet, clearly surprised. “Wait, you bought white ones? And red ones too?”
There was something oddly familiar about these flowers.
Mars grinned. “Of course! Aren’t these the exact flowers you all voted for in the group chat last time? The ones Molly picked, remember? Something about them being ‘moonlight’s secret favorite’ or whatever.”
He’d really done his homework. When he went to buy the flowers, he even called Conner. “Hey, Conner, remember that vote Annie and Milka did last time? You still have those pictures of the white and red flowers Chad sent our honorary sister? Can you send them to me again? The ones you sent before—too ugly, I deleted them.”
“I deleted them too,” Conner replied. “Annie probably still has them. Hold on, I’ll check her messages.”
So, he started scrolling through his wife’s chats, which got Mr. Nettleton all riled up. “Annie, why on earth did you call me Lizzy’s ‘helicopter mom’?”
Annie, who had just finished changing their daughter’s diaper, shot him a look. “Why are you looking through my phone?”
“Just answer me first.”
Officer Chapman suddenly looked like a nervous schoolkid, eyes darting away from the family boss. “I was just joking, okay?”
When Mars finally got the photos, the Newtown couple started hashing out expenses.
Meanwhile, little Lizzy lay in her crib, happily munching on her toes and watching her parents with big curious eyes.
Wow, Dad was finally sticking up for himself.
But weren’t they supposed to be sorting out the bills? Why did both of them disappear into the bedroom, leaving Lizzy behind?
“Ahhh!” she squealed.
He kept his arm around her, holding her tight.
It was quiet here. Too far away to catch any conversation at the gate, and hardly anyone walked by. With no one else around, the silence between them started to crackle, hearts thudding in their chests.
Funny—after all these years, her heart still raced like it did back when she and Mars first started sneaking kisses in hidden corners.
Mars swallowed, then lifted Milka’s chin, leaning down to kiss her. Milka didn’t hesitate; her palms were sweaty with nerves as she clung to his shirt, kissing him back eagerly.
The long-missed closeness made Mars hug her tighter. He shifted them so Milka was pressed back against the pillar, never breaking their kiss.
Behind that narrow bit of cover, their kiss deepened, the air between them heating up.
Even through his shirt, Milka could feel Mars’s body getting warmer. Neither of them was ready to let go.
