Chapter 316 Buttering Each Other Up

Blake coughed until his face went bright red, needing a good few seconds to steady himself. “I’m fine. Thanks, sweetheart.”

Sylvara kept patting his back, rubbing slow circles along his spine as she leaned close to his ear and muttered through gritted teeth, “Daddy, look at your star pupil-he’s playing mind games with me. He’s ruthless.”

Blake cleared her throat softly, picked up her glass, and lifted it to her lips. The corner of her mouth twitched as she murmured, “Easy, sweetheart. His hearing’s razor sharp.”

Sylvara immediately choked on her own saliva.

She doubled over in a sudden coughing fit.

Their roles flipped in an instant-Blake started thumping her back instead, exclaiming, “Sweetheart, you okay? How’d you end up choking just like Daddy?”

Face flushed from coughing, Sylvara rasped between breaths, “Daddy, I’m fine … don’t worry.”

Blake kept his eyes fixed on the broad back across from them and raised his voice just a little. “How is that ‘fine’? Look at your face, it’s bright red. Come on, come on, drink some water-calm it down.”

He stretched out an arm and snagged the glass of water in front of her.

Can water actually “press down” a cough?

Of course not.

After what felt like forever, Sylvara finally stopped coughing, gulped down a whole glass of water, and exhaled hard. “Daddy, can you not scare me like that? I almost coughed myself to death.”

Blake admitted defeat immediately. “It’s Daddy’s fault, all my fault. Next thing you want to buy-whatever it is-I’m paying.”

Sylvara’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

Nice. Saber budget secured.

Blake’s eyes curved with her smile. “Anything you like-under a million.”

Seriously.

She could’ve kept that part to herself.

Stingy to the grave, this one.

Blake was terrified that she’d actually blow the money on that saber.

And watch Blake still find a way to weasel out after saying it.

Petty.

Grinding her teeth but sounding crisp and sweet, Sylvara said, “Daddy, thank you. I’m so in love with you.”

Light flashed across Blake’s lenses. “Good girl. Daddy loves you too. Sit properly now-the food’s about to

come.”

Sitting properly meant sitting back-to-back with her bargain-bin husband, which felt like a full-blown psychological stress test.

Still, for her, this was just a warm-up.

“Okay, Daddy,” Sylvara answered, and had barely settled back into her seat when a surprised male voice sounded behind her. “Ms. Sylvie?”

She turned toward the voice and saw a man in his early thirties-clean features, sharp eyes, dressed in a shirt and slacks-about to sit behind Blake. He happened to look up and spotted her.

“And are?” Sylvara asked, her tone cautious. She looked exactly like this era’s “Sylvara,” and since he’d called her Ms. Sylvie, she wasn’t sure which one he thought she was.

The man walked over to their table and held out his hand. “Didn’t expect to see you here, Ms. Sylvie. Thank you for looking after Veyric at the Fifth Military Academy. My last name’s Cohen-Callam Cohen.”

Callam Cohen?

As in General Cohen of the Roseblade Legion?

Veyric’s family?

Sylvara rose, took his hand, and couldn’t resist teasing as she probed for confirmation. “So, you’re Mr. Cohen. Your First Battalion captain, Brigan, really knows how to make an entrance-I still remember it vividly.”

Callam froze for a heartbeat, then smiled. “I’m mortified, truly. That was my poor discipline. I’ve made a spectacle of myself in front of you, Ms. Sylvie.”

So, it really was the Roseblade Legion’s general.

Were the legions all this free these days?

The Commander was out and about.

Now, a general too?

And the Empire still hadn’t fallen-did they have some kind of invincible plot armor over their borders?

“You flatter me. Next time, I just hope your other captains won’t be quite so overbearing,” Sylvara said as she withdrew her hand, then smoothly shifted tone with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you. Veyric talks about you all the time-says you’re incredible.”

“He’s exaggerating,” Callam replied with an easy smile. “When you were taken from the Academy, Ms. Slyvie, Veyric was worried sick.”
