Chapter 319 Gone Off Track

“A middle-aged man who looks a lot like you, General Kenobia-and when he thinks, he taps the table in that same four-long, two-short rhythm you always use.” Agares’s voice came through the comm line, crisp and deliberate: “Even his name is similar to yours. So, General Kenobia-where are you right now?

As soon as he finished speaking-

The air in the cabin seemed to solidify.

Sylvara’s shoulders started shaking; she fought to hold in her laughter as she clapped silently, looking at Blake with smug delight.

Look at that. The student really was surpassing the master.

The cub she’d personally trained was now stripping her disguise instead.

And the sour bite of it-

God, that was sweet.

When no answer came, Agares’s tone cooled, edged with formality. “General Kenobia, please address my question. I need a direct answer.”

Blake froze for half a second, then let out a light laugh, sounding like she was making idle conversation. “They say a child grows up and slips out of their mother’s grip. My little Highness is all grown-already tracking his teacher’s movements now?”

Agares corrected her in that rigid, by-the-book tone of his. “I’m not tracking you. I’m trying to determine this: if what I saw was your disguise, then who was the girl at your side?”

Blake’s smile turned lazy, laced with clear disdain. “Baby, out of three billion citizens in the Troya Empire. I’d bet at least 100 million citizens tap the table four-long, two-short when they think. You can’t hang a conviction on one flimsy little detail and declare I’m on Cryo Planet.

“Besides, if I wanted to go to Cryo Planet, I could go openly. Why would I bother with a disguise? That makes no sense.”

“It makes perfect sense,” Agares replied, each word landing like a hammer. “You graduated top of the intelligence division in the First Military Academy’s 1,270th class. For someone like you, walking in openly is less efficient than going in undercover.

“The First Military Academy’s disguise program is the best among all ten academies, and you’re its most outstanding graduate. Becoming a harmless-looking middle-aged man would be child’s play for you.”

Sylvara was stunned, half impressed and half confused.

Her bargain-bin husband could comb through details this hard, yet somehow hadn’t pieced together that Blake was both an imperial High General and the Empress in disguise?

Blake’s smile faded; her voice dropped a shade. “All right, baby. Enough circling. What is it you’re trying to figure out?”

Agares went silent for a beat. “My apologies. I mean no disrespect. I want to know if Ms. Sylvie is your daughter”

Blake was speechless for a moment.

Daughter

Well. Technically, a bargain-bin daughter.

Newly acquired.

The relationship was still warm from the printer.

Sylvara also felt speechless.

Absolutely not!

Had her bargain-bin husband ripped at the wrong mask entirely?

When he said “daughter”…

He meant biological daughter, right?

Blake paused, clearly not catching on to her little Highness’s train of thought, and pushed back, playing dumb. “And this ‘Ms. Sylvie’ you’re referring to is…?”

“Sylvie,” Agares stated, cool and precise. “When I met her, she told me she was a kid from the Kenobia family on Harvest Star 2. Today I learned, by chance, that her name is Sylvie Kenobia instead. General Kenobia-is she the child you’re raising in secret off-world?”

Great.

Her bargain-bin husband had driven right off the original track.

Instead of exposing her as his legally registered wife-

He’d slapped a brand-new identity on top of her already thick stack of disguises.

Calling him “impressive” at this point felt like an insult to how outrageously over the top he really was.

Blake propped a hand over her face, at a total loss. “That question… when it comes to that question… it’s a long story. Actually, the truth is … the truth is…”

Her speechless hesitation reached Agares’s ears as quiet confirmation-that the “Ms. Sylvie” he was asking about really was her daughter.

“Having a daughter isn’t something shameful,” Agares said. “What I don’t understand is why hide her all these years?

“You’re unmarried, and you have no official partner. Having a woman willing to bear a child with you is something worth celebrating. You should have registered your marriage with her. Since you didn’t, why leave the child on Harvest Star 2 instead of keeping her by your side?

“Harvest Star 2 is nowhere near Centria. With Ms. Sylvie’s abilities, she could easily enter the First Military

Academy-or skip school altogether and go straight into a legion

Blake had never found anything this diflicult to handle.

Clearly, there was something very wrong with her teaching.

Absolutely, catastrophically wrong.

The little wolf she’d raised was beyond saving.
