“It’s just… because she’s a girl, you held back a little. You never expected I’d show up at the freshman boot camp myself, did you?”

Blake went silent for a long beat.

The logic was flawless.

Of course, he’d taught this one himself.

She’d give him a 99 out of 100.

If she gave him a full score, his ego would blast through the roof.

Perfect, my ass.

She was so speechless she genuinely wanted to punch him.

Sylvara was barely holding it in.

Yep. That was her dear, ridiculous husband-beyond outrageous, beyond sharp; she was completely out of adjectives for him..

“Fine, fine-if you say so, then that’s what it is.” Blake decided there was nothing left to salvage; every excuse she might’ve made, her little monster of a student had already ripped apart for her.

Serves her right to be single.

Serves her right to stay single forever.

His Majesty trying to set her up with a wife had been a mistake from the start.

She didn’t need a wife. She didn’t need anything-except a lifetime membership to the Forever Alone club.

Agares paused. “And the woman who had a child with you-where is she now?”

Blake let out a slow, sagging sigh. “Gone. She was gone long before this kid was even brought to term. Otherwise, what, do you think I wouldn’t have married her?

“And as for Sylvie-that girl … I only found out about her recently. That’s on me. All on me.”

All on her indeed-she’d thought she’d raised a morally upright, well-balanced student and even been smug about it, only to get his face slapped like a category-five storm: fast, brutal, and relentless, until he could barely stay on his feet.

Agares replied, “I apologize. I was too narrow-minded. I assumed you were shirking responsibility.”

Blake no longer had the strength to roast him. “It’s fine, it’s fine. Where are you now? I’ll come find you.”

Agares replied, “I’ll be back at the Endbloom Hotel within half an hour. I’m in room 88os.”

“Good. I’ll bring my darling daughter over in an hour to introduce you properly.” Blake hung up the call,

then slumped into the seat like someone had wrung him dry, staring blankly at Sylvara. “Sweetheart, if you want to laugh, just laugh. Holding it in hurts.”

“I don’t usually laugh,” Sylvara said very solemnly. “Not unless I really can’t hold it in. I’m sorry, I really can’t -hahaha!”

Blake just stared at her lifelessly while she laughed herself out, and when she finally calmed down, Blake said in a bone-dry tone, “Sweetheart, from today on, you’re my real daughter. Flesh and blood. So, you’d better be a little nicer to your Daddy-this heart of mine can’t take any more stabbing.”

Sylvara wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, then pulled out a perfect cluster of Sapphire Goldfinger from her space bracelet and offered it up with both hands. “Got it, Daddy. This is my tribute to you. From now on, any good stuff I get, you’re the first one I spoil.”

Blake snatched it away and stuffed it straight into her own storage, that jammed-up mouthful of metaphorical blood finally sliding back down his throat. “Remember what you said. From now on, your Daddy’s got your back. Come on, let’s go mess around for an hour before we go see your husband.”

Sylvara answered brightly, “Okay, Daddy.”

Then, she pulled out the bunch of grapes she’d originally set aside for her cheap husband-and ate them herself, one by one.

The bargain-bin husband didn’t deserve a bite. Not even close.

Blake piloted the flier, and the two of them wandered around Cryo Planet for a good hour and a half before finally knocking on the door of room 8808 at the Endbloom Hotel.

The door swung open. Auren stood there, smiling at Sylvie. “Hello, Ms. Sylvie. I’m Auren Dawn, medic of the Hunting Legion. We’ve met before.”

Sylvara gave his hand a quick wave. “Hi, Chief Dawn.”

“Ms. Sylvie, you flatter me!” Dawn then turned to Blake, who still wore the guise of a refined middle-aged gentleman. “General Kenobia, you look as impressive as ever. Always full of surprises.”

Blake’s lips crooked with quiet malice. “Smooth talker. Unlike certain people I could name. Where’s your Commander?”
